• New to the game, curious about odd occurrence

Me and my buddy are new to this game, we literally just bought it yesterday and I only have around 5 hours game play time total. Cliffs: -Buddy and I made wooden huts with metal doors next to each other, each with a wooden box and sleeping bag inside, a furnace/campfire/workbench outside. -While I was gathering supplies at one point, I came back and saw 2 dudes with guns, 1 on top of my hut, the other next to it (my friend was chilling in his hut at the time) -1 of the goons killed me after we stared at each other for a second and I said "Hi," in voice chat. -I respawn in the hut underneath one of them and call them all neck-beard beta phuckin phaggots with no lives, pretty much just letting out some steam. -They tell me in voice chat they're sorry, that I'm a nice guy, and should open the door and get my chit back. -I tell them in voice chat "phuck you, I'm logging out," and I logged out. -Came back on an hour later and everything seemed okay. -Gathered more supplies throughout the night, me and buddy called it a day and logged out inside our huts, metal door shut, half of our items in our inventory and half in the wooden box. -Logged back in today on Steam and friend told me to check out the game, that my hut is gone and my box is empty (sleeping bag is still there) -Logged into the game and found myself as a fresh spawn, no items in inventory, in a random place -Committed suicide and respawned back at camp, my hut/metal door was gone like he said, as was the furnace and chit. Questions: 1) Why is it that I logged in and was a fresh spawn immediately? 2) Why is it that my items in my inventory were gone, where'd they go? 3) How can I ensure that my items are safe in the future? My Theory - Those goons came by for revenge sometime this morning, blew up my hut, due to the fact I logged out ("slept") inside the hut, I died with it, they took the stuff in my box, and possibly(?) got the stuff in my inventory too while I was offline. Note - I've played DayZ Mod for 300+ hours and the Standalone for 10+ hours so I'm used to the idea of "not caring about items too much, they're expendable," etc.
1) Your sleeping body was killed. 2) Stolen or thrown away by your killer 3) Short: you can't. 3) Long: you can make them safer by building a proper house of at least 1 foundation, 4 pillars, 3 walls, a doorway with metal door and a ceiling. This will force raiders to use at least 2xExplosive Charges to break in. Wooden shacks can be hacked down regardless of the metal door, and try to build in a location that is in no way obvious or generally visible.
When you log out, your body doesn't disappear, unless the server you're on has Sleepers disabled. It "sleeps" on the ground and can be killed and looted, and on login you will spawn as a freshly-killed-and-reborn dude. Also, things decay over time. Also, on Facepunch, you can say fuck without censoring yourself; we're adults here. Calling a poster a fucking faggot directly is likely going to get you hit with a ban for trolling, but you can spell out the word fuck and faggot in neutral uses without being punished.
Thanks for the clarifications people! Both in regards to the rules and the gameplay mechanics of the game. Makes the game more hardcore and, in my opinion, enjoyable.
Also get used to it. It is going to happen a lot.
The wooden shelter can be pickaxed down, even if it has a metal door. If it has a wooden door, that can be destroyed with tools as well even quicker. http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1315394 There's no way to be 100% sure your items are safe, but for a newer spawn a shelter as described by Sammi79 is the quickest way to make sure your enemies at least have to expend C4 to take your things. You can also set up shop a long way from where people spawn, if you go far enough you can set up shop outside the radius that nodes spawn. That may be inconvenient because you'll have further to go on resource gathering runs, but with a 1 foundation building somewhere in the mountains to store things for the run back to your base you can effectively be sure that most people won't stumble upon your base while out gathering and decide it looks like a good target for a raid.
