Unable to connect to server fully

Macbook Pro Retina 15" 8GB ram, great video card
Purchased on Steam

Game starts and choose to play
Sever list loads (tried this with official and community lists)
Double click on server with slots,
Loading screen loads island and trees but stops on GUI and never changes
OS X reports program is locked up.

Any thoughts or ideas?

This round it made it past Loading GUI but got stuck on Loading Shared which is where it seems to stop the most. I tried local servers and international ones with the same results.
