Removing objects is a huge hassle if you accidentally placed something. If it's possible, make pillars and foundations destructible? Anyone can build and climb on top of your base, and leave permanent pillars and foundations lying around, which become insanely annoying.

Quick question. What if someone build a 2 story building and then removes all pillars? :) I am guessing you can only remove a pillar or foundation when there is nothing on top of it?
