Try using a more complex and descriptive set of words to explain your situation in more detail.
He says, that He wanted to eat, so he opened his inventory, but it didnt show up. Thats how i understand it.

Did it happen multiple times? On different servers? With what food items? How was his connection to the server?
I've seen some friends not realize that there were buttons at the top of the screen to open/close loot, armour, and crafting boxes. Perhaps he accidentally clicked it and didn't know how to fix it.
Sometimes when I join a server, I can't register anything so I get off the server and get back on to refresh it. It should work.
