• (OPINION) BAD things with "Rust"!

Hi, Just some feedback about my experience with "Rust" based on the alpha and the bad things about it. Not going to mention the good things because there are far far too many and I would be here all day. Anyway. These are the few things in rust that are kinda bad in my opinion and my suggestions on how they can be made better. This however is all only my feedback based on my experience with the game and is entirely opinion based. I know for a fact that my suggestions are probably a little daft and quite silly and I am no game developer so please don't get angry when you read my suggestions because I am not trying to ram this in the developers faces and get this game made the way I want it made like a selfish little child. ;). I'm just someone who has played alot of games and am offering a little feedback based on my experiences on what makes me happy in a game. Basically without rambling on,which is what I have already done, I'm just trying to help. Here is my list of all the bad things in "Rust" based on my opinion and my personal suggestions on how to make them better: - Military Weapons - In my opinion this is not a good thing. Yes I am glad they are in the game but I personally think they should be very hard to obtain and having a whole box of them in my base (which is what usually happens) is not ideal and actually makes the game become stale quickly as progression has pretty much ended. When I say hard to obtain I mean for example they cost alot more materials than they currently do, only the blueprint can be found and the blueprint has an extremely rare drop rate from crates/airdrops/zombies etc for all military weapons and researching military weapons requires alot more than just one research kit. What this would do is prevent people from gaining these weapons instantly based on luck. Yes they may discover how to make them but then they would have to make the effort to create them and throwing the weapon around to their clan wouldn't be possible for them all to learn how to make it either without them all having to put the effort in and gather the research kits. What this would eventually do is make the game alot more rustic weapon based with the military weapons being more used for defense of bases as people wouldn't be so keen to just take them out with them everywhere with fear of losing all their hard work. Creating less fresh spawns being killed by m4s, having the bow and arrow/rustic weps actually being used for PvP (which c'mon be honest they arn't used at all much) and making the game overall alot more awesome (which is entirely opinion). -C4- C4 is a massive problem for me at the moment. I joined a fresh wipe server which was entirely vanilla and within 4 - 5 hours there was a group (clan) of 10 people running around the entire map killing everyone on sight and raiding unfinished bases. They had too much C4 soo fast that they could already break into every base they arrived at. They were probably getting nothing out of the raids because everyone was using all their materials on crafting their second floor but these players were just C4ing everyone for the hell of it because it meant nothing to them and quite frankly it destroyed everyone's experience and I wanted those players banned because maybe those 10 players were having fun but they were obliterating every other players fun on the server and the enjoyment of many out weigh the enjoyment of the few. It's quite a shame really because if these players weren't such assholes they may have actually had more fun if they allowed everyone else on the server to progress to a standard in which they could defend their bases because they would present a challenge.... but no a challenge is not what these people wanted (rant over). I don't understand how this happened because when I first began playing this game C4 was pretty rare but as people gradually develop an understanding of how to obtain it easily you get these vast numbers of players in one group taking every airdrop, grinding resources and creating C4 together within hours. Now for my opinion on how this problem can be fixed. Only allow C4 to be craft-able and make it cost an absolute tragic amount. Don't allow it to be gained from looting a zombie or looking in a box/airdrop. Make the blueprint available through airdrops/boxes/zombies but causing C4/explosives to only be craft-able makes throwing it on every wall you see a less likely possibility. What this would do is actually make people think about whether or not they will gain more from using the C4 on that small 1x1 house than they put into making the C4. Overall it would make the game alot more calculated rather than griefing based. -Resource Dumps- The lack of resource dumps seem to be a bit of a problem. When you farm you just gain more and more and more resources which makes you more and more things and gets you a bigger and bigger house which is actually a bad thing not only for new players but for servers etc. The only resource dumps I really see that are 100% effective are bullets and arrows. Once you shoot them they're gone. Wood in a furnace could be considered a dump but it is just converted into another resource. Repairing structures is a dump but it isn't really a massive issue. Being killed is a resource dump for you as a player but doesn't remove the resources and just gives them to another player (hatched, pick axe etc). Resource dumps are needed alot in game like this to prevent a mass accumulation of items for players which gradually fades the "risk reward" analogy and causes strain on the servers which is why wipes will be frequent. I'm sure the developers already thought of stuff like this but here's my opinion on how the matter can be fixed. Durability on items is a pretty standard one. When you take damage from something you lose durability on an item of clothing for example and you must use materials to repair this otherwise the item loses all durability gradually as you take more damage and is deleted from the game/destroyed. Pick axes and hatchets lose durability the more you use them and can either be repaired or remade. Bows, guns and weapons in general lose a tiny amount of durability when you use them. Sprinting causes hunger to drain faster.. etc. The main way however to dump resources would be killing players. If you kill someone I don't think it's a good idea to gain everything from their corpse. I think (opinion) that some of the items or the majority should be permanently damaged and destroyed from the game (such as a piece of clothing, the gun they were using, some metal fragments fell out of their bag and became lost) which is all totally random and the rest of their items lose a large chunk of durability and need to be repaired. Obviously if they're carrying kevlar/m4 make those items more likely to not be destroyed but lose durability. Overall all my opinions on this matter in my opinion would not only create a decent resource dump but also make KoSing naked people actually cost the shooter a little bit more than bullets (which is my next problem in the game) which may reduce the number of fresh spawn casualties. -Airdrops- Airdrops are great but the reward from the ammunition one is slightly too much. 250 9mm, 566 and 100 shotgun shells kinda makes my previous point invalid about resource dumps for players and makes killing fresh spawns not really cost players much at all (I may drag on about fresh spawn killing but it's just a little example of banditry). Making ammunition a more rare thing causes the military weapons to be used with more caution based on the reward so using bullets on a fresh spawn would be an idiotic thing to do and would cause more people to bring out their bows, arrows and handmade guns for less serious zero-reward based pvp. My opinion on how to kinda solve the airdrop problem is to make the airdrop loot-able to the first 5 or X amount of people to access the drop. So make the drops loot-able by 5 players at a time and each player is only shown a small fraction of the what is in the airdrop. For example one player would get 30 bullets for each weapon and a grenade and the same for the
It's an unfinished product anyway. Things change, eventually.
So this is all one server based? The server my friend runs is actually hard to get stuff.
I haven't had any encounters with the types of issues you're speaking of OP however, the one thing I have had a bit of a problem with and yes I know this is alpha so it may (hopefully) change is two things... A) Hit boxes on items and critters: They just seem to be so oddly coded. A few times I've actually had to clip into a tree to gather wood (possibly just the server I was on) but hitting boars with a hatchet is insane...Sometimes I'm striking their flank and nail em. Others I'm pounding their skulls and whiff every time. Please address this. Zombies are just as bad when trying to hit with a Bow. No reticle makes targeting them very difficult. Even when they are right in my face them seem to ignore my arrows completely. Playing on a server that only had a 92ms ping and shooting a red zombie 3x's in the chest did nothing except give me a fast track to respawn...which leads me to my next issue.... B) A Mini-map/Way point system for at least Potential recovery of your body and/or gear. I was playing alone on the server for nearly 3 hours...in that time I died 4 times. Once resulted in losing over 500 wood that I was on my way to finding a spot to finally "settle down". I understand this is Alpha. I also understand that we are suppose to die and be able to be looted by others or ourselves. However I haven't memorized the map and have no idea where my body is most of the time even if I do recognize where I respawn. If something is planned to be done about this Yay! If not...please think it over. Thanks for your time. Ozz
It's an unfinished product anyway. Things change, eventually.
Im getting sick and tired of this "It's in alpha" bullshit. We are not blind, we can read the "alpha" sticker on the top right corner - you don't need to point it out everytime. Yes - it will change, but based on what? OP is doing what he is supposed to be doing. As an alpha tester, it is his duty to point out what he dislikes about the current alpha and what needs to be changed. Nothing wrong with making feedback threads like this, infact, it only provides good.
I'd like to see military weapons removed for the most part, but I think the base weapons need a ton of balancing. PvP and player traits in general need balancing. Handcannon - Heavily dependent on random chance making it ineffective for PvP. Pipe Shotgun - Extremely slow reload for no reason combined with poor range, buff one or the other. Bow - It's alright, higher damaging alternatives like the crossbow should be available for armored targets. Revolver - Gun Sway, Player Speed Bolt Action - Gun Sway, Player Speed I also hope they redo the raid mechanics at some point so it isn't something silly like farming explosives to make C4 to destroy wood walls. I wish everyone who screamed "it's an alpha" where it isn't even remotely necessary to do so got banned. This is simply an review thread, not a complaint.
The absolutely horrible netcode is the main issue. When people all of the sudden stand still because the server cant handle the load or whatever, and the constant rubberbanding happens every 5th second, it just takes all the fun away from the game. This is what they should be fixing first. Nothing else. Dont add beds and shit. Fix the horrible lag.

Might I suggest you look for a better server or take a look at your router/internet connection?

So we can determine that the hosting company is the issue then. If you're stating that you're playing on these too and not lagging, then that's bullshit. Everyone is lagging on the official servers. Community servers is a no-no, tons of modded shit and casual slash commands for starter kits and whatever.

I'm glad you included the video for Ohmwrecker (aka Masked Gamer). His videos are what convinced me to buy the game and to see it so horribly broken by hacks is incredibly alarming. The fact he was banned from threads for pointing out that contrary to FP doctrine VAC is NOT doing it's job is even more frustrating. But like all big groups they already have my money so what more can I do? :) Real solid post, liked a lot of your suggestions. Keeping this up ought to make this an incredible game once it's done!
