I just started playing this game. I'm enjoying it quite a bit, but I still have no idea what I'm doing. I managed to get some food and clothes and a wooden shelter with a door. Once night sets in I can't see anything, and I don't feel like wandering around with my torch lit, as I imagine it is a great beacon for other players. What should I do at night? Just log out and wait for morning?
One more question: Do I need to sleep? Is the only way to sleep to log off and wait?
Thanks!
At night, if you cant see, you can do one of a few things.
1. Raise the gamma on your monitor. You should be able to see at just about every time but midnight.
2. Sit in your house and wait it out.
Those are the main options. Walking around with a torch is a bad idea.

And no, you are not required to sleep.
I just sit in my house and either chat or sort my stash. Go afk smoke a cig or drop a deuce or watch some tv real fast and then come back for the dawn
Thanks for the reply. One last question: how long (real time) does night last? How long is the day/night cycle?
On a standard server, I believe day is 45 mins and night is 15.
I usually smelt my ores and do my crafting at night
I usually use night for crafting/construction.
go hunt for other people.
Light a fire totally safe
Go hit players with your tools. It's really funny if they have a gun, too.
whether its day or night, I do the same thing. Collect resources from nodes or people. Its easier at night btw,
This guy found something to do at night.

I would never put my fire on. Even the safest shack in the mountains can be seen. I had a very hidden shack and just oepened fire for a minute and bang second later the first guy walking past it.

I concur. Once you are established, unless you have a base with lots of people (especially guards in towers), don't light a fire. Last night, my friend ran the furnaces while I stood watch.
Some people log out, but never, ever, leave your campfire on. :quagmire:
I would gather resources until its too dark to see, then just wait the two minutes or so while you can't see.
One last question. My furnace doesn't seem to be working. I can put stuff in it, but it never gets smelted. The only option on the furnace is to open it, and it appears as 8 item loot box. Am I doing something wrong or is it broken?
I sit in my corner, cooking and smelting till the break of dawn.

Put wood in it as a fuel supply. Itll run out while furnace is lit

did you put wood or low quality fuel in it too?
And only cloth, metal ore and sulfur ore is changed by a furnace
I didn't put anything in it, as it required 10 fuel to build so I thought it was good to go. But once it was built it won't do anything. Guess I have to add more fuel?
WOOD is your fuel. PUT WOOD IN IT.
It required wood and fuel to build. Why do I have to add more before I can use it?
I touch myself, at night, what else is there?
Turn your gamma way up. The only time you will need to stop here is about 2 minutes at midnight where it becomes 100% pitch black. Gamma is overpowered.
Also.. i think holding a flare in your hands (not tossing it) lights up the area for you but it doesn't reveal yourself to others. So using a flare can be a stealthy way of navigating at night. Also you can save your flare by dragging it out from the hotbar into your inventory.

No im not trolling.. flares at the moment do not render for other players if you hold them in your hands. Try it yourself with a friend.
The night in this game is not long, Its not like dayz, Its maybe.. 15 minutes?

Sorry my *winkyface* didn't come off as intended. I'm aware, I just don't want other people to know. :P
