My friends and I started a Rust server about a month ago and so far we have had very few people even on it. Those that do get on play for about and hour at most. Are there any server owners that have found a really good way of getting people to play on a new server? We have Rust Essentials and the admins do not play so there is no admin abuse. If anyone knows of a way to get people to play on a server please reply to this thread. Also if you would like to join my server message me for the IP.
From my experience, server location kind of matters. I had servers on east coast and west coast of America and usually west coast resulted with more random logged in users per day. I don't know about Europe but my tip for server location in America would be Chicago or Dallas both being in a central area that server hosters only provide. And California or New Jersey. It really matters how much you advertise your server and motivate your friends and server community to also advertise. Once you start hosting a rust server.. you will notice the fun of the game is really maintaining the community and tension. This is why I stopped playing rust at this moment because Rust is practically a social game with no PvE content. Being Adam&Eve with one of your friend throughout the week will eventually lose all interest in this game. I've made arenas, fortresses, stadiums, towers, dedicated arena server.. etc Unless you still find playing governor of rust island is fun, I'd suggest not to waste your money on server hosting and wait for the newer version to take over. Ideally, its still waste of money hosting an alpha stage game that is not planning to work on PvE content atm. I really had fun being admin, maintaining good tension and community. Also creating market plugin tools on the side. However, I still think hosting a server right now is really waste of money.

We decided to host a server so that we could control/manage the environment. We didnt want to have to trust in another admin to get rid of a hacker or help with a problem. That is the sole reason we did this. You are right in a way but you are also wrong. I dont mean to be rude or anything but its just my opinion. Dont take it the wrong way. Again thanks for the advice.
You are trying to build a population at a time when many are off the game and waiting for the Reboot to happen. Building a population in normal times takes a lot of work and dedication if you don't have a bunch of players standing by to play or idle in your server or extra resources like websites and forums and all that. Best advice to start building a pop? be a fair and nice admin and get a good set of rules to back you up. It takes time - there are lots of servers to choose from out there! You say you are using RustEssentials which is a great mod and many players prefer (they do in my server anyways). check out the RustEssentials Wiki and the RustEssentials forums as there may be features that you haven't put in yet that players like (leaderboards, Factions, Zones, that type of stuff) or you could catch up with other admins running Essentials to bounce ideas off or generally network with, as well as advertise your server. The more you know the mod and the better/quicker you manage it, the better you will be able to react/use the tools the mod provides to quickly take care of problems, which is the type of shit players like to see. Happy players stay which pushes your population up, which in turn attracts more players. Its purely a numbers game at the moment and most players will only join a server if it has a half decent population, regardless of whether the server is managed well or not! How do you have the server setup? I have found many players are quite particular about what they want in a server, TP, Kits, Fall Damage, that kind of thing..
