• Should caves be added to rust???

Should they add caves to the game????? they would be a good addition to the game because it would be something for people to fight for if they make it so there's not so many rocks around the world and there's a heap in the 1 or 2 cave systems. they would be a place where if someone made a base blocking it from everyone else they would need at least 7 doors to keep all the other groups wanting the ores from inside blowing in and taking it over.
For the future map, yeah. Caves would be pretty cool. Not deep ones, but ones into sides of hills/mountains. Hollow hills would be awesome.
Fuck yeah! But that means changing the entire map... Doesn't sound like a bad idea, and it would put a great use to flashlights, but it would mean a LOT of kevlar camping cavemen XD
This would be pretty sick, wouldn't mind taking over a cave to settle in

Caves would definitely be an interesting addition. It would allow players to use natural structures as an outlining for their homes. As long as the caves aren't that big, I'm all for it. :v:
Our terrain system doesn't support this yet and it would require a big amount of work, so it's unlikely to happen for now
I can see where this would be an issue. The current map is flat and there really is no room for them. The whole map would have to be redone and the game is only pre-alpha.

Not if you can build / block inside of them. If they're just another area like the Rad zone chances are people will abuse it and build doors to block everyone else from getting in without having C4 charges ect. But other than that would be a bit of fun.
The problem with caves is that Unity's terrain engine, as MaxOfS2D mentioned, does not support caves at all. In order to implement caves, you need a radically different terrain engine, usually this means a voxel terrain (I believe Crysis has voxel terrain, that's why you can dig caves into the terrain). The idea behind a voxel terrain is that it is represented as a 3D volumetric grid of values - think Minecraft. Just as in Minecraft, you can easily have caves, overhangs, and whatever else. The main difference from Minecraft is in the way this is converted to a mesh - the most common way to do this is via Marching Cubes algorithm to produce a smooth mesh. There are some problems with this approach as compared to the current system. Currently, Unity uses just a raw heightmap. This is fairly RAM-friendly, but doesn't support overhangs. A volumetric grid, on the other hand, requires a fair bit of RAM - to the extent that you wouldn't want the whole world loaded all at once. This means you have to separate your terrain into chunks and load/unload these, and your infrastructure begins to dramatically climb in complexity.

Caves should be added, would be really cool to have some cave systems! But I really think that the ground around the entrance to the cave should be a non-building platue. So no late game guys just hog all the shit in the cave permanently. Just a few squares around the entrance, that no one would be able to build anything on, that way you don't have to blast past 1-100 metal doors...
Make it impossible for people to put platforms or walls into caves by making the tunnels just small enough, or just pull some weird wizardry.

As the terrain plane in unity has its limitations, the only way is to model the whole cave system, which will then eat up engines item limits to look good. One way it could be done is if you make instances (its own cluster), having abandon mine entrances, dwells etc that you activate and load a new area. These areas could be non building and nopvp areas for the sole reason for PVE. Like mining, exploring, hunting etc
