Help! Low Inconsistent FPS on Rust even though I have a good Specs
8 replies, posted
Hey guys, I really love RUST, Especially the scenery, but for some odd reason I keep getting FPS drops and Low FPS when all the settings are maxed even though I am supposed to be able to run the game with no such issue!
Just so you guys get an Idea of what I mean:
I could Run Battlefield Hardline Beta at a constant 60Fps at Ultra Graphics Settings while recording game-play footage!
Whereas in RUST I get 20fps when walking through a forest to 50Fps walking along a beach with graphics set at 3 out of 5!
And yes I do use an NVIDIA GPU and I have a feeling it might be the settings i'm using for RUST that might be causing the issue, so if anyone else here has a NVIDIA GPU and would like to assist, the settings you use would be much appreciated if mentioned here :)
Here is some more details about my Laptop:
System Manufacturer: Hewlett-Packard
System Model: HP ENVY 15 Notebook PC
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4510U CPU @ 2.00GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.6GHz
Memory: 8192MB RAM
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850 4002 MB
If there is more info needed to help me solve this issue please let me know :)
And to eliminate other contributing factors to this problem I would like to state that my laptop does not overheat, I do have an external fan, and that I do not run any system intensive background applications. V-Sync is also set to Auto and I have tried it Off to find that there is no Change to fps and consistency.
Thanks in Advance!
So your expecting a game that's still in development to run perfectly at a constant 60fps??
Which server's are you playing on, is it highly populated?
Have you checked your ping and are you playing over wifi or LAN?
Have you tried going to an empty server with a low ping and no one else on and seeing if you still get the same "issues"?
The fact your using a HP laptop would lead me to suspect there's a huge amount of bloatware installed to boot which wouldn't help matters. Also your insistance that you have to run it at the highest settings.... oh I give up

Lower your graphics settings to 1, and if you need to drop the resolution down a setting or two. You can still crank up draw distance and terrain quality, but should get better fps. Until the game is finished that's about all you can do. Also, getting 30-40 fps in a forested area with buildings is better than it was a few weeks ago! I used to get 5-10 fps around them.
like i said in the other thread, make sure the game is using your proper gfx card, not the inbuilt one.
'graphics.shadowdistance 0' might help a bit

1. The fact that ive seen videos up on youtube from legacy with players using laptops weaker than mine to record 60fps gameplay on max settings led me to believe that experimental in that sense should be better optimised?
2. Tried on unpopulated servers and full servers no difference.
3. My ping is decent at around 30 and im using wifi
4. and yes ive tried going on servers with different ping and there is absolutely no difference.

Thanks! but it makes no sense that I get such high FPS drops?

Sweet will try that! Btw procedural virtual texture rendering helped boost FPS up quite a bit.
I hear from other people with decent machines that they don't get very good frames. My PC is definitely outdated and I get good frames even in pretty populated servers (I run on lowest settings with draw distance maxed and shadows off). I get 50-60 FPS. It's likely just some random compatibility or performance issue that is hard to find because it's more rare. I hope for you that it will get better, I understand the pain of having bad frames.

Thanks mate, yeah i think its some kind of issue like that too.. I have a gut feeling I may have to manually reconfig my nvidia graphics settings for the game but i have no idea what settings to turn on or off xD
Something interesting to note to everyone using the in-game fps counter... I've noticed that it absolutely kills my frames. When I first look at the in game counter it shows 40-90 depending on what I'm doing but within a second it drops to 18-20 within a second. This happens every single time and I can feel the difference in game. Using Fraps or steam fps counter, I generally run 40-90 fps all the time. I am convinced that rust's fps counter is the culprit here and most people I ask to try this end up agreeing with me.
I am running a fx 8350 40ghz cpu and an r9-290x gpu, running 40- 90 fps. I think it is fantastic. Most of the time it hovers right around or above 60 when running around. Sitting right next to 30 burning furnaces in the middle of a house with a lot of other things in it, I drop to about 30-40 but no lower than that. The changes you describe from being at a beach, to being in a forest does not surprise me in the least. Considering you are able to run Rust as well as you can at this time is impressive for your laptop.

Also, you can not compare legacy with new Rust! Experimental is loaded with way more eye candy than legacy ever was.
