• Instead of Removing The Zombies...

I was having a talk with a few people about Rust recently. We got into talks about the impending removal of the zombies. Some people really like the zombies, some think they are too easy to manage. But one thing we all agreed on was that there needs to be some sort of hostile NPC group that can pose a serious threat to all players, as well as providing natural barriers to break through in the end game content. One person suggested Mutantish gun toting mountain men/cannibals who have guns and stick mostly to rad towns and appear in other areas as well. Another suggested vampires which would hide during the day, attacking people only outside of the sunlight, and then at night would travel far to kill players. But would return to hiding once dawn occurred. This person also suggested that people could become a vampire and hunt other players down at night, as well. And it was somewhere along the line that we came to a thought; why not just keep the zombies and create OTHER factions of baddies as well, and then the server admins can turn them off or on. This would create a unique experience for each server apart from just PvP or PvE servers. Some servers would keep the zombies only, and some servers would have none of the bad guys at all. It would give a huge amount of control of the experience to the players. And correct me if I'm wrong, but it is the control of the game which players love.
The vampires bit? I don't think so. But I would like to see a new baddy faction who would actively try to attack players.... Should have a decent AI though. And not too easy to defeat.
maybe a hostile ai military as the bad guys. i mean, who else would have dropped you off on an island if not for sport or training for an army. makes sense with the patrol helicopter.
Holy shit AI with guns, yes!

But you wouldn't be able to justify them wandering aimlessly around the map.... They would need a "purpose" for example patrolling or something.

ther puting muttons instead off zombies becose ppl call a dayz copy cat
I think if they are going to stray away from the whole zombie survival thing they should have like military check points at the edges of the map. They have multiple military units with armor and strong firepower guarding the outpost/checkpoint, there would also be 1-2 air drop containers depending on time of day. This would go along with the whole theme of everyone being quarantined and would pose more of a challenge then the current npcs. As far as replacing npc slot of zombies, maybe just make them smarter and give them light weaponry, like irradiated humans that got left behind.
Rust needs dinosaurs. This is practically a caveman-esq survival game right?
The zombies are good for a naked character to farm for quick gear. Other than that they are pointless.
jesus... you guys want this game to fail hard, huh? no zombies no dinos no monsters packs of wolves ranging from 4 to 12, ranging in level from 4 to 20 bears poisonous snakes rain, snow, cold, heat rats, swarms of rats spiders, poisonous spiders mountain lions foxes and coyotes, that not only bite but steal food and gear birds of prey keep it a real survival sim, get rid of this greasy kids stuff. and no robots... Peace B
Definitely we need more survival elements but I also love the idea of NPCs which could be actively aggressive and impel players to periods of cooperation if a certain area is overrun or a player town is under attack. Garry made a joking comment about introducing some sort of player murdering rampaging giant, I for one wouldn't mind if that idea became a bit more serious.
i'm not really down with "cloverfield". that would be better done in a city environment but i don't think it would be doable in an mmo. i've been thinking about a mmo game based around monsters of larger scale... say the smallest would be a full grown elephant sized, the largest would be skyscraper sized. not sure how survival in a world like that would work. but for this game, if they REALLY wanna do something real, ditch all the sci fi and monsters and paranormal. that's all stupid kids stuff (gin ja you must be one of those greasy kids thanks for proving my point) make the environment hard to survive in and don't lean on training wheels and excuses like they do over on "Nether" = teleporting ai is a poor replacement for good pathing. kids accept it, maybe even casuals. if this game caters to the hardcore players, it'll ditch all the fiction stuff and focus on the players themselves. though i will admit, human ai squads of armed psychos would be an acceptable "wildcard" on occasion. the ones on dayz epoch work pretty well. but in order for ai to be worth it's weight in salt, you gotta get it up to at least ARMA2 or 3 levels, minimum. anything less = cod zombie difficulty level = don't bother Peace B
Mutants with guns in the rad zones would be good.
After reading this post I am convinced that all necessary action in this game. It really is not enough. I myself have recently proposed waves of zombies at night in this topic http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1349603&p=43577647 # post43577647 NPC soldiers with guns is cool too. Military base with armed soldiers. It would be possible to raid secretly or break and grab a military depot for example weapons. •But hell, the idea of waves of zombies to me too is haunted.
I don't understand why people are obsessed with the zombies. All they do is run at you and melee, and unless you are a complete noob they pose no threat and are easily dispatched with the Bow. Really, Wolves and Bears do the exact same thing as zombies and make more sense as enemies. The only difference is they don't drop goodies like ammo.

I would rather have roaming packs of NPC with guns.
Make it sort of a Mad Max type. I want to fly one of those badass gyro planes
Rust needs dinosaurs. This is practically a caveman-esq survival game right?
No its a post nuclear apocalypse survival. So if somehow the radiation can resurrect dinosaurs, I don't think it fits
No its a post nuclear apocalypse survival. So if somehow the radiation can resurrect dinosaurs, I don't think it fits
So scratch the post nuclear apocalypse idea. I think Dinosaurs would make the game unique. But there are just so many things that this game can run with I'm excited to see the finished project.
There are going to be NPC attack helicopters that patrol at night and shoot people.
Have no issues with zombies being removed from the game beyond item drops. On the topic of instead of zombies I would love to see themed servers.
I wouldn't mind seeing groups of NPC survivors. Civilians who drop the blueprints, resources, handguns, leather armor, picks and research kits. Military/Militia with Kevlar, C4 and rifles and shotguns. I'm not sure that having them live in rad towns would make sense though.
agree in a sense, I have spent way to much time on this game and one of the major flaws I see is the lack of PvP/Players becoming bored with nothing to do. One of the focus points are zombies, people build near them and you get a lot of pvp around them. Instead of completely removing them they should be adding another type of NPC... Apparently they might just remove them all together and not add anything which is going to take away some of the fun in the game......
See here's what I love. Garry said that this game was a DayZ clone.. and he was right this WAS. Just because minecraft has zombies is that a DayZ clone? Just because this game has building is this a Minecraft clone? No, Zombies have been in tons of games because there a fun NPC and because they can be different yet the same in so many ways. Do I think zombies should be taken out... eh. I like them. But if they are taken out REPLACE them with something else. In a giant world you can't have much fun if all you have to encounter is other players. You need some kind of challenge when nothing is going on. This game is about choice, maybe make the Official servers have no zombies, but have the ability for the private to choose. Some like it some don't, but don't make a whole community suffer because you might "feel like a DayZ clone" The game has changed, zombies is just another addition.
Zombies are one of the most useless mobs I have encountered in any survival game. What should be done is an improved AI for Bears and Wolves. Make them some dangerous sons-a-bitches, and you'll have an actual competent enemy. I also think their should be an AI which stalks and hunts players, sorta like a mountain lion. If you have a wooden door, they'll start clawing at it, and ripping it apart, and possibly break it down in five to ten hits. You don't really need OMG ZOMBIES to make a good survival game. Survival on its own has thousands of natural enemies, including the fact you have randoms who go KOS Mode. Also just to add onto the whole, "Lets fuck with people" motif, make wolves hunt in packs, and have their eyes glow at night. Same concept as mountain lions going around and stalking people, but these are pack hunters which for one player, will be an absolute death sentence. Another thing is I really wish the Rust devs would follow through with the concept art: [t]http://www.facepunchstudios.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/forest-experiment-finishing-366x600.jpg[/t] [t]http://www.facepunchstudios.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/fuzzy-chicken-detail-600x304.jpg[/t] Because I totally want an irradiated deer of radiation, and venus fly trap chicken.
Is that?....... a facehugger chicken?...... I hardly dare going out at night as it is with all the KOSsing players (and I'm on a low population server....) Adding a facehugger chicken.... I don't think I'd ever come outside....

Inserting some PvE elements into lategame? Yes. Details? Don't care as long as the playability is great. Vamps sound lame though, get familiar with current concept art for new creatures like the mouth-chicken. ... Evil cows w/ minotaur boss pimps? :D
