Currently when your rock is gone, it's gone. But what about you have a chance to pick up rocks around the landscape.
Many a time I have been caught out without a rock either getting wood or being attacked.
The point is that a rock is a very temporary solution... you should be finding a rock node and a tree... and crank out stone hatchet first thing...
At the current time the durability is fair. Moreover, I always make sure that I burtally bluggen someone in the begining to in order to get two rocks.

the spawn points are scattered with bodies... there are extra rocks on every corpse...
