So if I shell out cash to purchase this game... am I then forced to play online on public servers or can I play single player or private server?
nvm

There is no single-player. At the moment, the only way to have a private server (and it's only "private" if you use a third-party whitelisting mod right now) is to rent one from a game hosting company. The server files are not publicly available for everyone to download.
Thanks for the info. Sounds like too much potential for griefers for me to want to spend money on it. Good concept though.
dont buy this game haha its hacker vs hacker ONLY

Many of the smaller community servers are very very good and I think are the best way to play the game. And quite honestly... lol "potential for griefers" is dangerously close to the whole concept of the game xD [editline]8th January 2014[/editline]
dont buy this game haha its hacker vs hacker ONLY
No it's not, don't play in the official servers. Take the time to find a good community server.
Thanks for all the input guys. Maybe when the game matures a little I'll reconsider getting it.
Join PVE Only servers if you are too pussy for PVP.
Thanks for all the input guys. Maybe when the game matures a little I'll reconsider getting it.
If you're solely in it to play single-player with absolutely zero players around you, then just wait till they implement it. If you are just afraid of being raided or as you say, "griefed", then play on some PvE servers or possibly just not get the game at all. The idea of RUST is susceptibility; you're never safe, not even in your own home- that's exactly why it's so fun. I say not to get the game because the community doesn't need another person complaining about how they got raided when that's the whole point of the game.
Question is Are you man enough to play with us big boys in the pvp
A big part of the game is to not get too attached to your gear, you're going to lose it sooner or later anyway.
Save our money for now bro. Its pointless to pay at the moment. All servers are full hackers and it is laggy like hell
Save our money for now bro. Its pointless to pay at the moment. All servers are full hackers and it is laggy like hell
Laggy, LAGGY? Holy shit, get a better computer and/or better internet. Also play on servers with less than 60 ping. You are right about the hackers though, I tend to just laugh at them for being shit though.

Its not my Pc and its not my Connection. Its Rust trust me. Keep on laughing on this hackers till u find out that every single container in is empty and your house doesnt even have a scratch. and u have to start all over again....every day...
There is FPS and internet lag
Exactly, what is your point? [editline]10th January 2014[/editline]
Keep on laughing on this hackers till u find out that every single container in is empty and your house doesnt even have a scratch. and u have to start all over again....every day...
I don't like to use the 'Alpha' excuse but here goes. The game is not finished, the hackers will be removed (for the most part), YOU WILL CONTINUE TO LOSE STUFF (sorry for caps, in a shouty mood); be it by patches, raids or hackers. Also, the game is not about hoarding your shit, it is about being better than other players (by no means am I endorsing hacking), try playing on low population community servers, get friends, become powerful. Sorry for incoherence and coming across as an asshole, it's 1am and my brain does not seem to want to obey me, also there are some stupid ass posts and I am feeling the need to vent my frustration.
So if I shell out cash to purchase this game... am I then forced to play online on public servers or can I play single player or private server?
As others have said you'll have to play online. There are private servers, or you can buy your own (about $20 - $80 / month). There are also MANY grief-free and hacker-free servers out there. Griefing is a part of any online MMO. Some people consider being shot "griefing". Some people consider having their shack raided "griefing". To me griefing is deliberately doing things to make you cry, like building a base overtop of and encircling your base or base door (which is hilarious BTW). Many (not all) of the hacking complaints posted here involve bad players getting stomped on by good players and/or not understanding how the game worked. People see that their base was emptied and their door was still in-tact, and whine about how "a hacker" stole their stuff ... without realizing that someone probably blew up their wall, stole their stuff, and replaced the wall. Or they see a guy jittering / lagging around a field and scream "OMG SPEEDHACK". Or they see a gun floating around and whine "OMG HACKER THIS GAME SUX" ... without realizing the admins have invisible armor. Or the guy who builds his shack in a super-obvious spot like along a road or on top of a hill, gets discovered, then insists that the hackers "must be using ESP to find me". The list goes on and on. It's a real shame because it makes the REAL complaints of REAL hackers get drowned out and ignored. Bad signal-to-noise ratio. Hackers and griefers do exist, but just like in real life, you'll have to learn to deal with them. The game is totally worth it.

Laughing at that means you should try BDSM.
Was also recently told you can be killed and looted while offline? Any truth to that? So far sounds like you can lose most of your stuff while you are at work or asleep as it is.
go for a pve only server if you dislike fighting other players and griefing, it can be a ballache tbh.

Find a safe place to log out.
