Those of you that prefer guns, this definitely isn't your thread. I love using the bow. It really is the most satisfying thing in Rust I can find. I'm fairly certain the dev team already plans on having different tiers of bow, so I'll leave out the part about where I beg for Composite Bow to be added.
Most Rusters would tell you the guy with the gun is usually king. Guns definitely provide the most and best benefits for everyday life in game, given their lethality and ease of use. However, I am part of what I'm sure is a larger minority than you'd think who actually much prefer the bow. The bow has some qualities that you cannot find in guns that make it, in my opinion, equal in many cases and superior in a couple...
It's REALLY cheap
Low material cost (in both amount and tier), low craft time (compared to guns), easy to find in loot, default BP
It's Silent
Being a silent predator is actually a very nice perk to have in the world of Rust. Not having a loud BANG and muzzle flash giving away your position can buy you a few extra seconds of stealth to land another arrow or escape from a bad situation.
Ammo is everywhere and free
Hit a rock for a couple seconds, hit a tree for a few, make sure you have arrows crafting constantly and you really can't run out.
Being able to craft a higher level bow for slightly higher costs would add these to it's list of benefits:
More Relevant Damage
Better Range/Accuracy *(that tier 1bow)*
Along with ideas that people have posted about poisoning weapons I could easily see the bow and arrow become an equally threatening form of ranged combat as guns.
MORE DAMAGE try using the new HV arrows with a bow = KILL EVERYONE
While I would definitely rather see a more powerful bow instead of a silencer attachment, I can't agree with you that bows are better. The one thing keeping bows in the game is it's cheap cost. If guns were as cheap as a bow, EVERYBODY would be using them.
And silent kills are nice and all, but the arrow's projectile speed is slow enough to cause too many inconsistencies. One half second of lag, or one fortunate step and your target knows exactly where you are. A gun will allow me to kill someone faster, and displace before anyone can hunt the gun wielder, thus making silence Unnecessary in most situations.
MORE DAMAGE try using the new HV arrows with a bow = KILL EVERYONE
Pretty sure HV arrows are actually supposed to do LESS damage than normal ones. They're just easier to aim.
The next natural step would be the x-bow with metal bolts. Easier to aim, more damage, longer reload time.

They do make more damage. The HV arrow kills all animals but bears in 1 shot whereas normal arrows don't kill anything 1 shot.
I'm with the OP on that one, bows are very brutal and underestimated. The silence factor is a good advantage, in fact the bow with HV arrows is better than a bolt in my book. The arrow does more damage and it's silent.
Only place a gun is better is close-mid range simply because of the fire rate. With the lag in Rust I miss so much that having a bow short range is almost impossible to hit (same goes with guns, but at least you got a full mag to recuperate hehe).

High Velocity Arrow
Less damage
More accurate
Faster movement speed
From devblog 63. So if HV arrow is indeed doing more damage than the regular arrow, then it's a glitch.
I honestly wish there were better/upgraded bows in the game. I liked the bow more in Legacy Rust, just seems too weak right now after the latest nerfs, especially against people wearing armour.
I bet they'll add in flaming arrows eventually to bypass armor.

I actually got my first few guns with the bow, killed an AK wielding guy and a newman that was hunting me.For some reason, people don't like shooting into bushes when they have guns.
Would be nice if we could have a Compound bows as suggested and a crossbow (crossbow would be slower reload and slightly higher damage but you can aim down sights and it's ready to shoot straight out of the inventory)
Let's hope for explosive arrows soon.

I experienced the same, I guess they don't want to waste the ammo.
Afterall when guns were introduced their only pros were being easier to use than bows. That is why bows were rapidly replaced by them because bowmens needed years of training, while you could master the gun in a month, especially early ones.
Bows must have high damage, and a longer learning course.
I think HV arrows are bugged. I've been one shot by an HV arrow ~75 hp with no headshot sound. I was downed instead of killed so I know it wasn't a headshot. Also, I've gone around 1 shotting people. Not sure if bugged or intended but hella fun
HV does lower BASE dmg, but the dmg of every weapon in the game scales with the velocity of the projectile so in the end, it does a lot more dmg.. like HV ammo.. you should do less dmg, but you do more..
HV arrows are supposed to do less damage, but atm they seem to do more than regular arrows. You can kill any animal except a bear with a single HV arrows. I was shot with one. Went from 100% health to down and wounded with 1 arrow to the leg. I don't think they're meant to be this OP, but they are.
There is a problem with arrow right now, if you it someone, let say in the chest, and you put another shot in the same part of the body, the first arrow sticking in your opponent body will block your second shot... this is very annoying.
Considering that arrows sticking out of their targets are a new thing, it's not surprising that it's buggy. I'm sure it will be sorted out over the next few patches.

Imagine Explosive Arrows
Its Inferior as you come against Multiple targets at the same time same as the bolt

It seems sporadic though. 2 of us shot this guy with HV arrows 5 times and he didn't die. He literally had 5 arrows sticking out him and he didn't die.

Hmmm.. seems odd. But anything can happen with newly added stuff. I'm sure this will get fixed soon as the arrows really aren't working as intended.

It was odd. He also took a hatchet to the face and a few rounds from an AK. However, I do agree that overall the hv arrows seem to do more damage.

Do arrows still have that problem where they block damage sometimes (ie the projectiles hit the arrow and stop vs. hitting the player)?

yep, they should prob remove the collision for arrows after they have hit their target.
How long do arrows stay in a player? I am imagining a pin cushion tank in a raid who has been coated in arrows by his buddies and healed.

I haven't tested but it's at around the same time as items despawn that are dropped. Also it seems if you hit an arrow that is already stuck,it will disappear with the arrow it is stuck to when the first arrow despawns.
