Storage Boxes - Why not shelves?

To me, the storage boxes don´t make that much sense. Why not place the items in real furniture with doors?

Those things could be:

-Rusty Tool Boxes
-Old Fridges and Freezers
-Wooden Wardrobes
-Cardboard Boxes
-Cracked Safes
-Wood Pallets
-Laundry Baskets

That could bring a bit more versatility into a base.
