Greetings!
you should be able to change your name, but it should become unique not allowing anyone else to get that name.
the game I was in last night had multiple people switching their names to that of another player.
leaving me to wonder if they also got the private /msg's i sent to that name.
and how it effects the gameplay.
and also how do you /msg someone with a space in their name?
That's........ the point of being able to rename yourself: impersonation.
I hear it's a feature. Though perhaps there's a store in the future with cosmetic items for purchase, and one of the purchasable items is the ability to have one "unique" name that can not be duplicated by another player.
As it's going to steam has there been any confirmation usernames will remain changeable or will we just have our steam name?
Seeing how most people in well formed groups use some sort VOIP such as skype, teamspeak, raidcall, etc. to communicate
Having the ability to impersonate someone it pretty much useless.
Bahahaha err0r are you talking about scr33chy on the au server? Because that was hilarious there were like 4 of em and yes all of them would have gotten the messages.

Oh yeah, this "feature" isn't going to bite back with a vengeance.
So 'jimmy' logs into my server with my exact (admin/server owner's) name, tells everyone about all the horrible changes that "I'm" going to implement immediately. Demands tribute. Slurs and degrades every person in the game. Ruins my reputation and the reputation of my server. etc etc etc. Oh yeah, great for business, terrific fun factor.
Or maybe jimmy logs in as another player, and tells a not-very-savvy 'co-admin' that 'someone else' put a door on his build, please remove it with their handy uber hatchet so that he can tidy up the place. Or maybe jimmy, "impersonating" someone else, just spouts off with racial slurs and whatnot then quickly logs out. No admin around, but Fred the fanboi got some screen caps and sends them to the admin. ooh Ban hammer time, only -- who gets banned? yeah... great feature.
I have rules on my server, one of them is no name impersonation. I'll whip out the ban hammer immediately.
Feature? This is a recipe for disaster. Rust is more MMO than FPS. Show me one MMO, or even a pseudo-mmo, that allows impersonating names in this fashion. This has great potential to ruin some servers' and players' reputations. Think about it. Really think about it. Although, I have some doubts if it will be intelligently thought about.
When there is no way for players to easily, yes easily because it is extremely easy to change your name, EXPOSE the impersonator then that is a FLAW, not a feature.
This thread is three months old.
And ban by Steam ID instead, you can't change that regardless of impersonation. You can only change your name once an hour to prevent it from being wildly abused.
Welcome to Rust.

And yet the feature still exists. The issue irritated me today, hence I came to see if there was any discussion on naming. This was just about the only thread I could find on the matter, so I posted here vs starting a new thread (in the Suggestion forum no less).
