I just successfully lost 2 AKs! All you have to do to recreate this bug is to drag and drop a weapon (don't know if it's only the AK) onto a large chest in your inventory. (onto the chest icon)
I had the chest in my hotbar (if that matters) and wanted to equip my weapon again which resulted in losing the weapon. Please, FP team, fix this bug asap! D:
And no it wasn't in the chest when I placed it down.
What most likely happened is you dropped the gun when you clicked the box, and the weapon fell through the level. I've see things fall through every once in a while.

Ummm...TKay...you have to right click to place the chest, then put the AK in it. It's not there when it's in your hotbar xD
EDIT: OHHHHHHHH, okay, I see, I misinterpreted that. I thought you were thinking putting into the hotbar chest would put it in there until you placed. Man, do I feel stupid now, lol.

I haven't had things fall through a floor in the new rust unless it's a natural floor like a rock or something.
It happened 2 times so that could still be a coincidence, yes. But why should it drop the weapon in the first place? I drag and drop the weapon onto another item in the hotbar all the time and I didn't lose it before that way.
Well...if you have an AK left over you can try and recreate this. I'm pretty sure it really is a thing that exists.
EDIT: Yes, it definitely is a bug. Tried it with other items too (unintentionally) and they just vanished.
