• What Rust really needs

Lets put aside all of the short term needs of the game to focus on a broader picture. Here is what I think the game really lacks : 1) Long Term Primary and Secondary Objectives ... PVP is one thing, its fun, but when you are in the game and spent 100houres it simply gets boring. So you raid other people's homes but its still pretty boring. Crafting isn't an objective in itself since you loose your house / resources so easily. Which means that it makes more sense to have a well hidden shack with low quality metal some bullets and a sleeping bag through out you entire time in the Rust world. When I read the initial statement about the game I find it quite treacherous. Saying that its up to us the player to make the game interesting... "Thanks for your purchase, take this rock and go survive" (note that in this case just build a staircase, climb on a huge rock, stack chicken in a box, break the stairs and stay idle eating chicken : CONGRATULATIONS you won !). The game clearly lacks objectives or simple ways to spend some time in the game (aside from shooting people up) since socializing is so dangerous (due to the huge amount of bored people). The game as it is (yes its an alpha) simply lacks depth (I hope they are not planning on making it a fancier version of this shallow shell). Add some dungeons (laboratory, cave, old prison) with things to kill and to loot, to explore as a team. Add a deck of cards, to play poker at night... The more you play the game and get involved in the gathering, crafting and building, the more you realize you are wasting your time on useless aspects of the game. 2) A Story Yea MMORPGS are such a hit because they are immersive thanks to the scripted life of the environment. NPC's could be key to unlocking further aspect of the game why not have simple gathering missions for rewards, send you to places for you to explore etc... or giving you advice when you start the game. With NPC's factions. Each faction whether they are human or animal or zombi or something else give you tools or abilities to play the game differently than other people. Personally i would love to learn to hunt like a wolf with very low key weapons like bows, have quick movement thanks to a "wolf skin armor" that would maybe make wolves not attack me or even help me in fights, why not have one as a pet and hunt down people steathly or just roam around the surrounding to warn you when someone is near. Some may prefer huge metal houses with sentryguns and more bulky equipment. That could be obtained through a different faction. Let me be some sort of Princess Monoke :D 3) Player Customization, Gameplay Differentiation Obviously at some point in the final stages of development, when the game has a purpose that's not hidden behind the word "Freedom" (like recent wars) we will get customization options and realistic choices in term of game-play, not creative exploitation of game glitches. Game-play differentiation is quite important. Just like factions, should the player want to play stealthly jungle boy style or like a smoker (from Waterworld) some gameplay alternatives should be given to players by the developers. I think that for a survival game RUST is a bit too Counter Strike like in the sense that powerful weapons are accessed too easily and there are too many of them and they constitute 90% of the game. As soon as you get a bp for a m4 you are pretty much ready to start raping. Why not balance gameplay for players who wish to use more low key weapons. I believe item repair (which is in development) may help, but not as much as stamina based on weight limit would. Do give us specialty items not "raping rampage helicopters, tanks etc.." 4) More Defense for bases, More Restrictions to what you can carry. Specialty Items, in a group of 3 I am the guy with binoculars, one guy has a map and a compass and another one has a pet or something else. Force us to make strategic decisions Give player a sub purpose when being in a group. Maybe we'll all take walkie talkies and a fourth guy takes binoculars. Don't make it just about being full kevlar with m4's and C4 and running and raping people out of boredom the only purpose of the game. Its too easy to kill and get killed. Put a stamina bar, and the more weight you have the slower you run to give a chance to naked dudes to run away from approaching terminators. Terminators would have to coordinate more to surround preys. 5) Cheating is also frustrating people who at some point are just gonna start walking away to competition. I have lots of respect for the developers and love the game, but since they are overwhelmed with comments and inquiries I think it be nice that they started to talk more about their concrete longterm vision of the game, not "down the road" adds like helicopters or water. Please do make additions and discuss the future of the game. As "alpha" players it is our responsibility to give our opinion.
+1 Interestingly enough, I do agree with pretty much all that's been stated. Also adding more depth to the less developed technique, because now its just "Till I find Mp5 or M4".
naked women
Naked women who are secretly men.
I think some of your ideas are not for rust such as sentry guns in huge metal bases whilst also having someone run around with a wolf and a bow. Imagine spawning in with a rock and I get mowed down by a huge ass machine gun tower.
k so heres my idea. cities. so if you find a nice open space you would like to start one. you apply to a game master or such. once approved you may place your main "mayors" building. when placed it has a large circumference around it that will be deemed a non pvp area. this area can be used to make businesses and also public housing. so that you may be able to live in a non pvp area. once this "city" is established people on your server may apply to you to purchase a "lot" in your city. if they want to build a nicer building then the wooden shacks currently available in the game they must enter the mayors office and purchase plans to do such. each time a person builds a new house or building the city is enlarged slightly. making the city more attractive. furthermore. there needs to be skills. when in the mayors office, you can learn a skill. ex. (buggy master, where you can level a skill to allow you to make vehicles from a plain horse pulled buggy all the way up to who knows. hot rods motorcycles, exc.) (building master, that can level the skill of different types of buildings from a shack all the way up to sky rises. exc.) (once your leveling is complete you may sell building plans to people that would not be available in the mayors office.) ( breeding master, can level up the skill to breed horses (for buggies/riding), hunting dogs, companion dogs/animals, exc.) (weapon/armor/tailor master,) the skill list can go on and on. Digging!!! needs to be added.... please as well.
Objectives are up to you to come up with. That's basically the whole point of an open world sandbox game. As for the other things you mentioned, I'm pretty sure Garry mentioned it in his AMA. You might give that a read-through. http://www.reddit.com/r/playrust/comments/1u5kqp/i_am_garry_newman_ama/

As for the big ass tower, sentry gun would maybe have limited range so that it is mainly used to guard housing.
That wall of text though,

http://www.reddit.com/r/playrust/comments/1u5kqp/i_am_garry_newman_ama/
Thanks for the link I read through but what i found annoying in this reading is that there isn't any statement made... which is just like the game itself. No actual statement is made either. Everything is under consideration but nothing really announced either. I get that the game is at an early stage but it would be very reassuring for people that are already getting bored in the game to know what actual direction the game is going. As Garry mentioned, and as it is true for all art forms, creativity comes from constraints. The game need higher objectives and constraints. Honestly there aren't so many objectives you can come up with in the game. Jail some random dude, steal someone's stuff, climb the highest mountain, building a base and maintaining it... Building a giant ass prison on a server and try to invite people to join it... What for ? at the first sign of boredom people are gonna start blowing it to pieces. The problem with player made objectives is that they don't seem to impact the game so much... making them kind of useless... That is why i think this statement is very treacherous, a big lie. It's just putting the responsability of the game on a community base that is very mixed (70% assholes, 15 % of carebears, 15% of people without an opinion). To come back to arts : the real artist, makes a statement through his art sees the positive and the negative in his environment and takes a position, makes a statement. It is quite courageous to take a position and risk to be criticized for it. If the game only rely on players to give it interest at higher end, the game will always be pretty shallow. Having in game objectives doesn't exclude player made objectives. I'm probably the only one who cares that it's a wall though, I'm dyslexic so reading this would take me hours lol,
k so heres my idea. cities. I think those are interesting ideas in term of mechanics and added content. Though you can pretty much do it with a large enough gang, ransom people for protection and land usage. But for the skills part I agree at 100% that we should be able to specialize in a field, so that when you start again on another server, at least you have a something to do different from the last time you played (a different specialization). When I learned explosives i thought "awsome I can be the demolition guy in my team" than my friend researched my explosive and from then on I didn't have much to be different from him except farming resources that he didn't farm or using a different weapon as he did. In all honesty anything more than what we have now would be awesome. But according to what i understand from reading Garry, they want to make it our responsibility to build the environment such as cities or abandoned buildings (the cool thing about abandoned buildings in game is that you never know how long they have been there, and with in game decay, you can tell it wasn't here longer than a week... and the building doesn't hold any characteristics different than what you would be able to build yourself).
so I didnt read any of this....he mentioned naked woman right?
Let me start by saying that I've never played Garry's Mod. I do like the OP's ideas, in particular, about objectives. One thing to consider is if this game does end up being raid/pvp centric the creators could also focus more on traits and blueprints, but in a less conventional manner, therefore placing less focus on possessions. I've never been a big fan of games such as EvE online, but I do like the studying mechanics...that is to say, have players studying in certain fields while they are offline. These are the one things that can't be taken from you. In terms of objectives, I think this is just where the dev's are uncertain of where they want to go. Garry's Mod is open world, anything goes, correct? In Rust, scavenging and foraging takes so much real world time and therefore has value (unlike FPS's) when you are killed. Something, however trivial, is lost. To alleviate so much focus on PVP, which is a consequence of lack of objectives, come up with some really interesting, or community oriented PvE. People tend to think that fewer restrictions creates a more fun environment. This can be true for the short term. For the long term, there has to be an additional outside pressure that force humans to work together. The only thing that, historically succeeds in accomplishing this is an outside factor. Evolve the PvE, give some objectives, and the pvp will become more interesting while also improving the community. I play Rust but I don't PvP...not because I don't enjoy it, but because on the various servers I've played I don't enjoy the majority of people doing it. What could prevent gamers from turning Rust into another MMORPG for a week and CoD (complete with naked teabagging) or strategic shooter for the rest of the time? PvE. You might find this funny and possibly a joke, but just off the top of my head how cool would dinosaurs or enhanced predators be? Pvp would fall in line if your had to team up with your neighbor to take a mammoth-sized beast down. Or, imagine being inside your shack when instead of hearing just steps, you feel them, and see the ground shaking? Or coming across a pack of several predators? Just a thought.
We agree I believe. Another thing that could be remade is to randomize the behavior of the wildlife. For example it be nice if wolves bears and zombies (and what follows) them would change target whether on proximity or damage taken. Just to make mixed fights Pvpve a little more random.
Hello, I have an idea for another NPC, I've heard that the zombies will be removed and that they will become some kind of mutants. I think it would be cool if the mutants will look like naked new players who just entered the server and that someone from far away will think that it is a new player but that it is actually a strong mutant. this helps for the people who kill noobs without giving them a chance. The mutants will be strong so that even people with good stuff need to be carefull when they see a naked guy. The mutants need to be rare.
