The reason I am creating this thread is because for too long the hunger/thirst system has been neglected and suffers from lack of development. I have 1300 hours in game, during my time played I can say I have never once starved or dehydrated myself to death.
I believe I and many other players want a more realistic survival feel to the game, the mechanics are there and I understand that this is a work in progress but why do we get so much meat from hunting wild game and why does food and water get used up so slowly I understand this is alpha but this doesn't mean that players should be spoon fed, literally.
A quick and easy fix for this would be to speed up the rate at which food and water need to be replenished, and reduce the ammount of meat that is gained on killing an animal.
This will get more people out of their bases and force them to forage, hunt, farm, and cannabalize the population. Right now people spend far too much time behind the safety and comfort of their walls, infact the only time people leave their base once established is to pick off newer players for their hard earned resources or to raid and also loot rad towns.
I still enjoy rust but it's too easy, if surviving means sit inside your loot room all day and craft then I'm sorry to say this isn't surviving.
I am a conservative player I know that rust is in development but it has been for quite some time and the game seems to be getting easier rather than harder, simple changes to mechanics such as this will increase the difficulty of the game and present more of a challenge.
Just my 2 cents on the matter, I would like to know how others feel regarding this matter.
I'm a bit split on the food system.
On one hand, food is a fairly good source of healing and being forced to find food never becomes a nuisance.
On the other hand, there is no incentive to use food outside of healing and satiating the ultra low hunger bar. There are no long-term benefits of keeping a character well fed (full food and water bars). Additionally, you can find so much food just roaming around, that it never becomes problematic. I always try hoarding food (along with all other stuff), but usually have way too much of it by the weekend after the wipe.
That said, a rework of the food system is planned some time soon according to the road-map, so I can't complain too much considering Gary himself said "Metabolism is shit".
same page re: hunger and thirst. it just really isn't a part of the game right now; in legacy if you didn't find food you could actually die from hunger. of course in legacy you could also carry a massive stack of chicken breast which was easily obtained in the first few minutes alongside the resources for a bow and hatchet, so i suppose that never really worked beyond the first few minutes; but at least it worked.
we have the foundations in place; water sources, food sources, burnt and rotten food. i think it's just not an interesting part of development for them. and balance is important of course, once it's properly implemented; it should be an active thought in your mind, but it shouldn't be more important than progression or the game becomes tedious and grindy(er). that probably makes it a bigger, boring thing to implement, and IMO would have it pushed to the back burner regularly to give them time to code moar guns into the game;)
at the moment it's more like cs meets dayz; all about the guns and gear, not really about living.
If the Hunger and thirst system got some "TLC", people would be able to siege bases. If you don't know what a siege is, it is essentially build defences around an enemy base and wait for them to run out of supplies.
I have been saying this for over a year now Poppadomus.
Increase the rate food and water is depleted when resourcing and running. Increase water depletion in the desert heat. Standing idle or doing very little in your base would have no impac, so sieging would never be an issue. Food should not increase HP either or very little at least.
It is quite obvious the developers are busy with other issues and this is not a priority right now but i do look forward to when the food/drink system is complete or worthwhile.
Glad I'm not the only one, as I said developers are busy with other areas of the game, it doesn't take much to change a few variables and values though - which can increase the current difficulty, the game shouldn't be this easy after 3 years in alpha.
Hello,
if you want to try hardcore survival server, look for "SecondChance" in Rust.Tweaked hunger and thirst also gather rate is half of vanilla, so its really hard to play. Not forcing anyone to play there, just try it :)

Sorry, i'm to well established on a server that I play on. I will bare it in mind for the future however.
I was going to post something like thos but I never came around it, I agree with everything you said.

The more support, the more interest developers may take.
actually its not a survival game atm// its just a sandbox shooter with basebuilding.

I hope this changes somewhat soon, since back in early 2015 rust was a really good survival in my oppinion
