I figured I would make this thread since this is Alpha and we're supposed to be helping the devs polish this game. I love being able to play on my Mac and not just my PC, so THANK YOU devs for making it as Mac compatible as you can.
My system:
Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics AMD Radeon HD 6770M 1024 MB
Software OS X 10.9.1 (13B42)
When the game loads and I get in everything is as smooth as can be.
Currently my issue on a mac is that I cannot fully load into a server without the game locking up on "Waiting for Character"
http://i.imgur.com/z2Bz5Mi.png
If I alt-tab and try to go back to the game it won't work, right clicking the icon just gives me the option to Force Quit/Application Not Responding. EDIT: I should say that this is on both community & official servers. (This has been fixed, see below)
One other thing, and obviously I'm not sure what the Devs know about or are already working on, but in windowed mode the mouse cursor is off by a little bit, I can't take a screenshot with my cursor in it, but on the Server List the cursor is about 3-4 servers below the highlighted server, and if I click it will load the highlighted server, not the server the mouse cursor is hovering over.
I'll do my best to keep this thread updated. Other Mac users: Please be detailed and to-the-point about your issues as well, I don't want my thread turning into the shit-storm that the _authfailure thread turned into with name-calling and bickering. We're here to help the devs make a bad ass game.
Solutions for Macintosh so far:
- F1 for Console
- In console to make "grass.on FALSE" work you must put "FALSE" in all caps. (this turns off grass to lessen your CPU/GPU load). EDIT You actually have to enter the command twice, sometimes 3 times.
- In game Options turn down graphics rendering as far as you can to get your game to run smooth. Some have it at 0%, I have it at roughly 30%
Current Known Issues:
- MP5 Butt-stock obscures the player's vision : http://i.imgur.com/gApVIK9.jpg
- Cannot Command+C or Command+V to Copy and Paste in the Console
- Mouse Cursor is not accurate in windowed mode
Yea I'm having the same issue I've been trying to post on the forum to see if anyone is trying to fix the issue or anything. I was able to play for like 10mins then it froze and when i tried to join again it froze at "waiting for character" again.
My system:
Processor: 2.93 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory: 12 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 5750 1024 MB
Software: OS X 10.9.1 (13B42)
Same issue.
Processor: 3.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Memory: 32 GB 1066 MHz DDR3
Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB
Software: OS X 10.9
Hey mates. Bought the game yesterday and couldnt play, had the same problem. But today with some mods I managed to enter and play. Here's what I did:
steam-> rust-> properties-> set launch options and entered this: -nolog -force-feature-level-9-3
and to play I use 1280x720 fastest settings. Its fucked up cuz i have a Imac27", with this resolution i use like half of the screen, but w.e, I can play this way. gl for you guys.
I have also tried to connect to any servers. It seems to be the update in 19 of december where it stopped working for macs. I have tried many times but it always stops at waiting for character. I have tried to change it to fast in the settings but it doesn't change anything.
And just asking we wont have to pay for the game in beta again to play it or in the full version. Will we?

Please don't clutter this thread with these kind of things. Yes we know gamers under the age of 25 think Macs are stupid. There are real-world advantages for OSX, for example, I'm a graphic designer/vice president of a company and I have to travel a lot. I also grew up gaming on a PC. Sometimes on airplanes and in hotel rooms I like to play games, but I can only take my Macintosh on business trips.
This is a thread about fixing bugs for Macintosh to help the developers create a fully rounded, polished, and diverse product. Developing for Macintosh opens up a whole sector of the market, 66 million users in the USA alone. More revenue for the developers equates to a better game, and more games, and more updates, and a fair and deserved monetary reward for the people working so hard to make this game.
This is not a thread for juvenile jabs at one operating system or another. We're trying to debug and troubleshoot, we're working together to make something here.
Please consider these things before you make a post like that.
monsieurfolie : I tried your launch settings but the game still stopped responding at "waiting for character". What do these commands do? -nolog -force-feature-level-9-3
Edit; I've tried all graphics settings, at 1440x900 resolution, no combination of settings seems to have an effect on the authfailure, the time out error, or the "waiting for character" error, which would make sense I think.

hmmm,I used those commands from this thread, talking about performence improvements: http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1320454
about that authfailure & timeout error thats not related with OSX but with steam. It shouldnt occour..
keep on trying. It took me some hours to get in, I kept trying to load the game, getting further and further at the loading phases, and tada, got in. Now Im off, lets see if after dinner i'll be able to enter again. =)
oh, and Im using windowed mode.

this is semi-proven (the re-try loading a bunch) as i have gotten in game and walked around on my MBP retina.
EDIT:
just got in, getting same lock as last night. as soon as i push 1 to take out my rock she freezes.
just whacked a tree and it worked? very cautiously saying so.
well, I got in at 1st try. =)
The grass is fucked up for me
I'm having the same issue i just purchased the game as well
I am having issues as well. In full screen mode I get stuck at the "Waiting for Character" load screen step. If I changed to windowed mode, I can get past this step and to the GUI, but with a black screen. This screen does display one chat message though, but my friends have told me that it is normally about a minute or two delayed.
Running a 27" iMac with a 1TB fusion and 8GB ram, 2GB dedicated graphics
Had rust working perfectly , other then a few face punch errors.
Was an idiot and did the update - and i too am stuck at the waiting for character screen
Sometimes I hear the in game sound, sometime it goes unresponsive before the loading character screen.
I have tried the suggestions by monsieur with no luck.
Bruuuutal :(
I got it to work by going into game and turning the rendering down to about 50% from 100. If you keep going lower it may work. Since trying that, I've loaded in just about every time.

tried a bunch of different resolutions and managed to get in the game, worked okay until I shot a gun or tried to turn on a fireplace etc. Game sometimes gets in now but always freezes when you try to do anything.
love the game though , hope it gets fixed soon

I just wanna play this awesome game, fix this!!!!! :)

yep, my graphic rendering is almost at 0%. xD
Ah you guys figured it out, if I turn my rendering down to around 30-40% I can play no problem and get past the Waiting for Character. I just tested it and it worked, and then 2 wolves and a bear ate me.
Stoked that we can play now! Just need to figure out how to fix the render setting for beta.
I know I sound stupid, but I really need to know how to turn down your graphics card rendering. I just bought the game and I really can't wait to play it!

Options menu, Main game screen
I love the walkthroughs i have seen, and the few times it has worked past "getting character" it has looked great.
99% of the time I do not make it past the loading screen, and when I do, it crashes the moment I try to do anything.
Have tested every possible resolution.
Macbook Pro, Retina 2012
OS X 10.9.1 (13B42) with ports/developers tools, and completely up to date.
2,6 GHz Intel Core i7
16GB Ram
768GB SSD
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB
2x DELL U2913WM - 2560 x 1080 @ 60 Hz
(even tried with one of the heads unplugged as most games do not use the 2nd head)
...would very much like to play this game
bringing this thread back to life. im getting random locks which obviously leads to my instant death. anyone else getting these random locks? its usually after im done crafting an item or shoot at something...
bump
maybe the mac sucks? hahahah
maybe you should post something less retarded
You know the dialogue box that should pop up every time you launch Rust? The one where you have like 12 different options for resolutions on the right-hand side. And around 8 different options ranging from "Fastest" to "Fantastic". For some reason that has stopped popping up for me when I launch Rust. Does anyone one know how to manually pull that up?
Grass is still game breaking. Is this just me?
I got it to work.
using -nolog -force-feature-level-9-1 and windowed mode (hit ctrl when you launch for the dialogue box), with "good" quality and the full 2560 x 1080 screen size, and then when the main menu launches I set the rendering down to like 25%.
After it connects I maximize it into full screen via the little arrow thingie in the upper right hand corner of the window. I had 6 hours of great play today, really wonderful game, I cannot wait to see it improve.
