• A brief note/request from a MODDED Server Owner

Hello Facepunch. I have been running a modded server for several months now, and it is becoming quite successful. However, today alone I can honestly say that I have lost many players for one specific reason - the pumpjack. On a modded server, the pumpjack is a vital addition to any player or clan that get going. There are far too few animals on a server and nowhere near enough oil barrels at either the airfield or the Sphere Tank to provide an entire server with enough Low Grade Fuel to even think about conducting raids. I read that this was taken out because people "sat back and let the game play itself". Well this is quite the contrary. People are constantly moving around to acquire blueprints, scout areas, find key materials and then head back to create enough material to conduct a raid. No player in a modded server has ever mentioned to me that pumpjacks are overpowered. I understand that you are doing what you believe is best for your game, and I respect that a great deal. However, I do believe that you are in error for completely removing them from the game as it greatly affects the modded community. I am requesting that you rethink this approach and reinstate the pumpjacks (or make an option so that a server owner/operator can reinstate them) as per the interest of their player base. Thank you for your time in reading this. J.

While I totally disagree with your opinion on this, let me help you. I wrote a plugin called "Cornucopia" (available on Oxide) that can be configured to spawn extra animals and oil drums randomly on the map. You can add 5k drums if you want to go crazy and you'll never run out of fuel. Try it out. Another thing I have on my server is a modified version of "Rain of Fire", modded so that it drops low grade fuel. I have these running every 30 min and players rush to it to gather the precious low grade. I've been running my server jack-less for 3 weeks now and it's in my opinion the greatest move I have ever done. There is 10x more action than there was before, people are going out like never before.
I personally will not be playing the game anymore I don't mind some work to the game but spending my time picking rocks all day everyday isn't how I like to spend my time playing a game this game is becoming one of those that is all work and no play [editline]20th November 2015[/editline] this move might be good for the long term servers that only do a wipe every few months but for a modded server that does a wipe every 2 weeks this move will kill most mod servers personal I think facepunch cant seem to move forward with out taking 2 steps back the last few patchs have been a big disappointment to the modified server community and I don't see myself sticking around for the next disappointment
You are so wrong, this is the best change Rust got in the past 6 months. It will weed out the lazy bastards (yes I'm looking at you) and bring back players who value fair reward for effort. It shifts the balance back in a way that makes solo play worth doing again. It is the nerf groups needed. Work that ass girl, no more afk domination.
lazy I am not feel free to asking anyone that has played on the server Im in I spend all my free time setting up and helping other players out with getting them setup and headed in the right directions. but from that im getting from you is that its lazy people who spend time gathering to pumpjack and quarries to get them set up so they may spend their time focusing on actually enjoying the game playing and not spend every waking min chipping at rocks for resources further more why not just give the servers the options to add or remove them if some servers like them and other don't why not instead of a force opinion of a few. time and time again facepunch has made changes that a lot of people disagree with. and I haven't seen one poll of anything asking the players thoughts on the matter before the change is made just the bomb shell a few hours before the release of the patch.
We could just do away with resources and give everyone a million of everything when they spawn too. Bottom line is gathering and competing for resources is the heart of this game and things like the pump jack makes the game easy and boring.
or they can just give each person a tent and a pickaxe because that what rust is coming down to [editline]20th November 2015[/editline] why even have a base when all you need is a sleeping bag and some small stashes :goodjob: [editline]20th November 2015[/editline] [QUOTE='Deicide[RS];49152056']We could just do away with resources and give everyone a million of everything when they spawn too. Fallout 4 makes rust a non issue for me, I will try it again In a few years after I am tired of playing a real game
[QUOTE=Alcatraz.;49152189]and pickaxing rocks all day is so much fun maybe you should go work for facepunch to im sure they can use someone else to help screwup the game even more[/QUOTE] You are missing the point entirely. You know, I used to play MMO's a lot and I got bored of leveling characters, I thought it was a grind. Played WoW for years and ended up leveling a ton of characters to max level and then I would get there and think well, this is boring, more grind to get max level gear, more grind to prepare for raids, more grind to get achievements, more grind to do daily quests, etc. You've got the best gear, you've cleared the best raids, you've done it all.. and realize damn... I got nothing left to do.. and you play less.. and then maybe level an alt and become interested again until the grind kills you etc. Ultimately you realize that 3 things drive most multiplayer games: A goal you wish to achieve, a feeling of progression towards that goal and finally unexpected adventures and interactions with the game as you progress towards that goal (be it PVE, PVP or MP Coop). If you are given the goal as you start, or the progression is too fast, or the unexpected adventures are too far and few between, it makes for a very boring game. The goals of Rust is pretty much to obtain and secure loot... the progression is both in the blueprint system and the setup of your base(s)... and the unexpected adventures all come from the interactions you will have with other players, good and bad. If there is no grind... the goal is moot, you can reach it within hours. There is no progression, as your base is built and secure within hours as well. And there is not much user interaction because you do not need to go out and interact with the world or other people to reach your goal, because it's already reached. Granted, this is supposed to be a sandbox game where you set your own goals that are different from what I just listed, but most players do not think like that, most players do not have the imagination necessary to get pleasure out of this model, they need goals spoon fed to them and they need a clear way to progress towards these goals and they need to be challenged in that progression. So there you have it, the A-B-C's of Rust...... The grind is what separates you from your goal and it is also what will force the unexpected adventures that make the grind interesting and fun. What fun is it to have 100k stone? Zero... The fun is obtaining it... The fun is going out there with your gear and pick and picking rocks, not knowing if you are on someone's territory.. Not knowing if an heli will jump you... not knowing if a group of geared players will pass by and either mow you or fail doing so, spicing your "grind" and making it a memorable adventure. The stress of losing all, or maybe being attacked at any time without cover or support, all this is what makes a game like Rust FUN. So yeah, the grind might look like a bore when you just consider the grind.. but you have to look at the bigger picture.

I run my own server and that is all my players seem to do now, sit in there bases. The only time they leave is to get wood. I don't think Rust is ready for quarries and Pump Jacks just yet.
