Rust is early access, alpha and ~10% done...expect to see more bugs/glitches in the future before it goes live!

One of two things happened, you either were too close to the wood pile and when you destroyed it crumbled under you or you pickaxed yourself in the feet and that killed you.
It's a known issue. Just crouch when getting wood.

Also, this glitch has happened with multiple variables, when I was standing on the rock, beside it, crouching, using any of the 3 tools- it's probably related to the texture changes, and how those affect the player model, but I'm no expert. Point is, is that it's not going to happen less by the player doing X or Y. I can confirm it's pretty random, and the constant variable may have to do with the nodemodel change itself.
Once I killed myself, I started crouching every time I gathered wood and have yet to kill myself since. Just Saying..
