Welcome to the future.
Welcome to the future.
What Future? It takes too much Ram. I mean there isn't anything that takes this damn much. Not even develop tools who btw takes like 4 gb.
I noticed when leaving the server, the RAM usage stays the same. It doesn't free the memory. I'm not sure whether this is intended or not, but it seems like joining another server makes my RAM fill up again.
Basically, every time I leave and join another server, the RAM usage get's higher. Obviously, this is fixed by exiting and entering the game.
Edit: I started performing several simple tests.
Before:
- I had around 30 to 40 fps on modded servers when they were full of buildings. This fps registered at max settings.
After:
- I'm having a 35 to 60 fps on an empty modded server. I couldn't pinpoint even one building. I lowered everything on minimum and I gained around 5 to 10 fps. Thus obtaining a 40 to 50 approximate fps.
- I also stared at one single point with the steam fps counter and player with the values. The max I could obtain is still 10 fps and it still seems lower than before considering that there were no buildings around.
- I also stayed in place for around 5 minutes. Staring at the ground. My fps was initially 90. After around 20 seconds, it gradually lowered 80fps, 70fps to a stable 60fps. After around 30 seconds, it got back up to 90 fps. I kept seeing this thing happen, without anyone approaching me or hearing any animal moving nearby.
All I'm trying to say is that there might be a weird fps drop from time to time, but I cannot pin-point the cause of the issue.
I'm also not sure if I'm the only one experiencing this. Could there be more opinions on the performance matter?
5gb?
That's tiny.
I have had Chrome take up more than that.
Keep in mind that the game is ALPHA and not optimized. They're trying their best to make it playable and perform on a wide range of hardware, but you're not going to find it optimized for quite some time.
Wide range of hardware. Toasters probably are out of luck though.
I only played for a few minutes at lunch time (had to go back to work) and I was only getting 25-30 fps compared to the 50-60 I was getting before. I'll have to try disabling PVT this evening to see if it helps.
But I did see some terrible performance drops at random times. Lighting a camp fire dropped my frame rate down to about 5 fps for several seconds before going back up. I suspect there'll be some more updates and hot fixes rolled out over the next 24 hours as problems are found.
i5 4690 , AMD 280X (3GB of VRAM), 8Gb RAM - 1600Mhz CL-9 . These are my system specs, if it helps with anything.
For the people above, there are already several posts made on the performance issue.

There might be more besides these. I do understand it is an alpha and pretty much everybody got that idea up till now. All I'm saying that the latest patch had a negative impact on the performance, even though they offered more tools to help lower-end devices, apparently those tools aren't helping. At least on my side.
It's just about raising awareness and giving a helping hand.
This update also introduces a heavily upgraded terrain compared to the last version. That in itself was bringing computers to their knees during development. That's one of the reasons there was no update last week. The current version has been improved drastically compared to it. But there's still a lot of room for improvement. I'm sure we'll see performance increases as the game is "out in the wild" for a bit and they can gauge how it's going.
aren't the star citizen developers expecting everyone to have => 16
The min spec for Rust is 4GB, right now you should have 8GB because of performance issues. 16GB is overkill for games in general right now unless you're running other stuff (like Photoshop) while you play.
RAM of this level isn't cool. Strong indicator of a memory leak.
Hope this can be figured out sooner rather than later.
My Rust client uses over 6gb of my 8gb, and makes my computer cringe every time I play ...
16GB is the new 8GB. 8GB is pushing it for gaming now, like 4GB of VRAM is starting to (all new cards will be 6+ from now on).
Unused memory is wasted memory. Windows works this way.
if you have extra memory dont be surprised to see it go.

Bro its a game made in UNITY freaking UNITY. Telling me i need 16 GB OF RAM so i can play it or 4 gb of VRAM, are you serious?
Unity is just a development platform and engine. It can be as resource-hungry as you want. I don't see how this makes any difference whatsoever.
Welcome to alpha, shit like this happens, and it will change over time.

Maybe if you're playing some shitty games that haven't been optimized...
I want to put in my 2 scents, to everyone saying the game is too demanding or is causing issues i agree, but to the people that are also saying that the game is an alpha so nothing is properly optimised i also agree, but what makes absolutely Zero Sense is this.
My desktop is a windows 10 64 bit operating system, with 8Gb's System Ram, i am also on a intel Core i7 6700 3.40 ghz quad core processor with an Asus Radeon R9 380 4Gb.
Now here is my issue, the game keeps causing my video Drivers to Crash, why thats happening no idea, meanwhile my friend on steam, has some AMD Processor, ( AMD Cpu's Still aren't as good as Intel ) and he has the Sapphire Radeon R9 390X if i recall pretty sure his is either 4Gb or 8Gb Vram, and his System has 16 gb's system Ram, in the terms of graphical power, we are almost simular, yes he has a slightly better Gpu than myself, but i have the better cpu, but he also has more System Ram than i do.
So on full screen mode for Rust, my driver crashes in no less than 2 minutes, on windowed mode i can get 5+ hours if i'm lucky, ive tried lowering my settings the issue with the crashing still just as bad, Max settings still the same way, meanwhile my computers resource monitors say i am always using 1.6+ Gb's of my system Ram, which is to be expected with an Anti virus always on the ready, steam running in the background ect. but when i turn on Rust that 1.6Gb in use turns into only 5.5Gb's in use and i still have the rest of my ram free to use, i don't go over 37% on my cpu usage, my card temps do not exceed 70 degree's Celsius.
So even with all this My drivers are always crashing on Rust, meanwhile my friend with practically the same amount of power does not experience these issues, now ive debated maybe its something to do with my mother board, i highly doubt it, if it was an issue with my board, it wouldnt just be rust that is acting up, So i plan on replacing my 2 4gb ram cards during the holidays hopefully with 2 8 Gb's, and if the issue continues, well then ive lost any hope for this game period.

and for those wondering what my gpu specs or whatever are this is it,
Graphics Card Manufacturer Powered by AMD

Total Memory Bandwidth in GByte/s 182.4 GByte/s
Don't know if any of that means anything to anyone but thats what ive got, and i can run every other game i can get my hands on, other than rust.
I encountered my first BSOD after playing yesterday. Exited the game and was taken straight to a memory allocation error.
~800 hours logged so far and it's the first and only instance I've personally seen of the memory leak.

Was this really that important that you had to revive a thread nobody had looked at in seven months? Especially considering how much has changed under the hood in Rust since April?
Still, it was something worth putting my two scents into, and even with all the changes, countless people are still having issues, even the people with Rigs that can easily support the game.
it just shows, and im not trying to step on toes here, but the Dev team i personally think need to focus solely on fixing the game now, rather than content, because the more content they add, and the less they fix, the more of a mess things become.

not having a toaster tuned with a gameboy in 2015 pretty much means you asked for it
Damn 8gbs?? My cell phone has 4gbs of ram dude. Time to update that shit, ram is cheap and you can max out your pc for 150$ did that myself and now I have 32gbs of ram. Put a bit of money in your computer.

32gb of ram is just idiotic. I guarantee that none of the programs that you use need 32gb.

You must have a stone age computer

I have 32 GB of ram as well, but I do however use photoshop, illustrator and indesign until my hand bleeds on a daily basis.
It was 50$ more to max it out. I'm sorry your poor?
