Sometimes I can not find my friend because it takes me about 10 minutes to go around the river. So is he giving easier kill and looking for a spawn closer than trying to go around the river.

Boats are a must and tier 1 should be as basic as possible so a single person vessel that is craftable with primitive tools and materials, there are a lot of islands and big rivers on these new maps and a boat of some kind is really needed to traverse the map.
the coracle is just this can be made using just wood and a hide (from a animal) and twine/rope. for rust this would equate to just wood and cloth, an easy to build tier 1 craft. Megs lower design looks to be a version of this boat.
