• Use knife to harvest animals

How about instead of using an axe to get best animal harvest, you instead use knife? Right now bone knives are very much useless. Maybe have it so axe gives more meat while knife gives more cloth? This way we could also use machetes as an upgraded tier to replace bone knife for animal harvest.
Knives would have more sense because in real life most people cut animals up rather then hatchet them to bits...
I am in favor of this as well. As an actual hunter, I know that an axe is a terrible harvesting tool. I would like to see tiers as well, so from bone go to stone, salvaged, then hunting knife, which would be the equivalent of the hatchet or pickaxe.
I like the idea Dark Hunter pitched. Would have some utility
Love the idea of different tools honing in on specific animal resources. You can tailor the tool to fit your need. The tool material can still matter for tiering, but specialization will let the class of tool matter more than it does now.
I like the idea, I'm just worried that with so much specialization managing the hotbar will become tedious. Maybe we could get 1-2 more slots so that having a map and three harvesting tools won't be a complete hindrance if you find yourself in a gun fight suddenly.

Hopefully harvesting animals is more specialized-tool-friendly. More than likely you'll be full up on meat or cloth; focusing on skinning or meat would be a decision made before you left the house. And specialization should still collect other items--just not as well. The idea is to let us narrowly target our shortage so we aren't laying waste to the animal population in pursuit of one item, dumping the rest. (Although I'll grant you there's some RL precedence there.) Maybe the hatchet (already on your belt for wood) could be a general animal harvesting tool. The specialized tools would have dimished returns so if you aternated between them equally the hatchet would be a better choice. That way if you need it all, you're already covered with the hatchet and won't have to switch between the specialized tools. But if you do have a specific need, bring that one specialized tool: the machete for meat, knife for cloth/skin, and hammer for fat. You'll get much smaller amounts of the other stuff, but you probably could care less (we've all been at the point of having insane amounts of most items but a depserate shortage of that week's critical item). Maybe not totally realistic, but it gives items a purpose and lets us more effectively use available resources.
I think it is a balancing act - make the game too realistic in the tool-department, and players will find themselves having to spend a ton of resources making a ton of different tools. Not to mention that with more and more tools players will want to utilize when resource hunting, will make confrontations a lot more frustrating with the chance to lose so many tools along with whatever resources were gathered. I do digress in that I think the bone knife ought to serve a better function - right now, the thing is essentially useless.
Urrrmmm what ? - I'm confused.... The knife is already used to harvest animals, I have been using it for weeks now. It's meant for animals it doesnt wear out like a hatchet and it's quicker.

I keep one handy when I'm out resource grinding so I don't have to waste wear on my hatchet.
If they leave the animals more rare i would recommend adding an Metal Knife or simply Knife to the game which gives us 200% more stuff out of the animal
Doesn't it drop less resources though?
no its same as the hatchet useful in the early game
Doesn't it drop less resources though?
Nope. Definitely worth the inventory slot during a grind.
