so with the addition of swords into the game i really have only a few questions.
what is the point of the swords if they have less range than a spear? right now spears seem to have a larger melee range than other melee weapons.
even with armor you can't close the gap between a guy with a ak in melee so whats the point? even if you can close the gap the closer you get to said player the more accurate he becomes with his full auto ak.
even in ambush scenario's i don't see a sword beating a full auto weapon if they don't do extreme damage. so why waste the resources on them?
depending on the mats cost i don't see them being a viable replacement for a revolver or semi auto.
melee vs guns just doesn't have chance. i don't understand the point of the these weapons.
Swords rock!
This is a valid point, the melee weapons need a buff, if we should compare to real life you don't just take minor damage from a sword hit to your head, you gonna drop dead unless you got quite the headgear on.
For the more gore-like players, they would probably like to have fun with cutting off limbs.
swords and machetes do a lot of damage, one shot to an unprotected head kills. Though I do agree that there should be more balance between melee and ranged combat
Maybe guns or ammo will become scarce further down the road.
Never bring a knife to a gun fight

Unless it's an Eoka...
its seems really pointless to add 2 melee weapons after implementing so many ranged weapons.
If you know how to dodge bullets (and the dude shooting at you is shit), you can easily kill a stuffed dude with only a spear. So both are useful. But I agree, melee isn't used that much once you've found some cloth and made a bow.
Or maybe it's time to introduce decent body armor against small arms fire... decent defense against small arms, with exception of exposed areas.
That will give melee weapons/bow an increased chance of being a stronger damage dealer.
It's historical fact that weapons like bows swords and spears disappeared for a reason, they suck against a guy with a gun!. The boar war proved this point over a century ago! This game is just getting silly now. Adding something like swords when firearms are so easy to get and seem to be the focus anyway. Rust needs balance desperately! And a clear vision of who you are and what your goals should be might help
Melee weappns are awesome. Just use them when u can...and craft ur revolvers and shottys and use them primary. Quit worrying about balance between 2 things that could never have real balance...ranged weaponry wss invented for a reason...so losers cant get up on u with melee....
Again, they will be slowing down progression over the next two months and likely beyond that.
Have a little patience Alpha progression is never fast, we will probably see the first few fragments of Electricity next update already, some of which will make certain items and materials harder to get.

Look at this guy complaining that artists are doing their jobs instead of adjusting game balance. Your expecations for an alpha are too high, and if Rust isn't fun right now, stop playing and play some other game for a few weeks or a month, and then check back in on what's happening in Rust. The game and development studio won't disappear if you look away from it.
Balance is going to change constantly, and I would expect to see firearms go through a sharp decrease in availability in the near future. I don't know anything specific about balance changes, but it seems logical enough.
As for who you are... the devs are not revealing what's really going on in the game as far as backstory goes yet (although it's pretty obvious that, whatever happened, Newmans are living on a post-civilization island). Your goal is simple and it's already spelled out for you on the Steam Store page:
The only aim in Rust is to survive.
To do this you will need to overcome struggles such as hunger, thirst and cold. Build a fire. Build a shelter. Kill animals for meat. Protect yourself from other players, and kill them for meat. Create alliances with other players and form a town.
Whatever it takes to survive.
It's just variety people, who cares how many melee and other weapons are added? Variety makes the game fun!
Who complains about this stuff? wow
