I don't know where to get started and I have some great ideas!

Forget Oxide, use Pluton instead. http://www.pluton-team.org/
I don't know where to get started and I have some great ideas!
I suggest http://www.pluton-team.org/ Its faster and more stable and every time there will be someone who will help you with something :) Plus developers are very, very active on core and plugins...
Point is, not here.
Pluton has a very extensive community and the staff comes from the original Magma and Fougerite for legacy. It supports up to 5 languages and maybe more incoming (C#, JavaScript, Python, Lua, PHP). http://forum.pluton-team.org/ Join us on IRC if you have any doubt :)

Inparticular, in-game modification abilities as opposed to external options such as the choice of programming language. Someone recently was keen on being able to load in user generated Unity assets, so they could create new weapons based loosely on the ones already in-game. Custom maps were also mentioned.
Modding the client right now is 98% going to get you banned for cheating. Neither Oxide nor Pluton (where did the Pluton fanboys come from all of a sudden?) are client-side mod platforms - they are installed on the server only. I'm sure client-side mods that aren't classed as cheats will eventually be possible, but not yet.
and I were like Magma anyone? ._.
I'd suggest Oxide - http://oxidemod.org/ Oxide is stable with an active admin, and in general more plugins. And I don't have numbers to back it up, but I think it's the most used Modding platform. (I could be wrong) Eitherway, it's a great community. Your welcome to hit me up on there (same name) I have about 9 plugins on there and a few would be good to help explain how things work. All of my plugins are C#.
Yeah really. Looks like a (desperate) attempt to gain some free notoriety.
I honestly didn't even know Pluton existed, and I checked it out, and the forums are pretty sparse, only like 50 mods too. It looks like it might have promise, just not yet.
(where did the Pluton fanboys come from all of a sudden?)
I really liked Oxide back when I hosted my own Legacy server. The main reason I switched from Oxide to Pluton with the launch of "Experimental" was because Oxide is was still focused on Lua, which I personally hate. Quite some time passed between me asking for Python support and actually supporting it in Oxide. Pluton supported Python from the start. Still don't regret making the switch.. Oxide has a large community, but from my experience, most of them are either complete n00bs or people who know stuff and therefor act like they are god. Pluton is smaller, but way more awesome.
A little competition is always great. Use C# though it's native and will innately execute faster in both Oxide and Pluton.
We're not fanboys, we're developers. In this project, everybody is accepted, everybody is helped. We work on open source code which everyone can look (as some other mod developers did) and edit to improve Pluton. We have an active staff, not only one administrator as others do. We care about performance, as tons of benchmarks show that up.

The owner routinely answers any questions I have, and if he's busy, others do the same just fine. There are a few trouble makers, but it's like that everywhere.

At any time, we have more than 10 users on IRC, constantly and actively helping each other. That's the main reason forums aren't so active.

A counter would be a question bank/bot of course.

In oxide Wiki:
Getting Help Still need help? Search our community forums or create a new thread if needed. Got the VIP package? Hop on our Slack and ask away!
And ask those questions, costs you 15€ a month, or you can post on forum and hope someone answers you... In Pluton you hop in IRC and ask what you want whenever you want...
Yeah, forgot about that. Pluton is completely free. http://oxidemod.org/account/upgrades No more words needed.
We're not fanboys, we're developers.
When three different people all come out to praise the opposition after I throw out the URL to one of the server mod communities, including someone who registered just to promote it, you'll forgive me for calling it like I see it. I don't have anything against Pluton or for Oxide. Point is that modding isn't officially supported by the Rust devs right now, other than garry making sure it's not impossible to do, so the OP will have a much better time going directly to the Rust modding community at the places it's established itself in. Maybe more than one, because maybe he'll want to try out Pluton, Oxide, Magma/Fougerite. But, very little actual how-to modding discussion happens on this forum except in the specific threads for individual mod platforms and specific tools, like the Rusty rcon tool thread.
