So I have been thinking for a while about how to improve in-base crafting and I think Ive come up with a decent idea.
I suggest having something similar to the workbench, but with an inventory inside, maybe a bit more than a large box. When you want to craft something, it uses the items from that inventory to make it. You can then walk away and it acts like its crafting normally, so cancelled items go into your inventory. I know that, for me at least, taking out my stacks of items to make something then put them all back can be a bit of a pain, so putting crafting mats into a workbench would help streamline the process. Just a simple idea I thought of, tell me what you think!
I guess this is going to make a huge imbalance. This makes crafting/farming C4 way too easy ;-)
I think it would work better, If the player has to stay while crafting. It makes no sense to just throw everything on a table, come back in an hour and "poof" your wood morphed into a spear ! But it would be cool if it made crafting a bit faster (say 10% or 5%) The thought being, Its easier to craft, say, a hatchet when you have something to bear down on, than just in your hands.
Pros:
Crafts slightly faster
Pulls from a larger inventory
Cons:
Cannot do anything else while crafting.
Cost. (probably same as a large chest plus a workbench)
I dont think it would be game breaking by any means, just a better storage and crafting system. And thing wont get made with the table, if you start crafting it works like normal, so the finished item goes in your inventory and isnt waiting at the table for you.
