• Character Customization

Hi, I bought the game rust after seeing a few vids on youtube. I installed today. when loading the game up and having a wonder around i noticed the inventory character was black. I checked that i hadn't missed a character generation and tried a few things. Eventually i asked in the game chat how to change my character from black to white. Straight away I was told you couldn't. I said you must be able to etc etc. I thought people were winding me up at first and didn't believe them. I gathered from the questions they were asking that they could be telling the truth as it was becoming obvious they were fishing for me to say something racist. I have seen and done this myself in games to take a screenshot and get unpleasent people banned. Anyway, I am just not happy playing as a black character. I am white in real life and dont see why I should be forced to play as a black person. I can just imagine some of you reading this are going to think im some racist blah blah blah. I have read through the google search there are black people in the same situation. They don't want to play white. There are females out there wanting to be a female character aswell and stuck with male. In the game chat someone said to me, "your black?, you should think yourself lucky i am stuck with an asian sineade o connor looking character". I have been searching for a way to change it with no success. I decided to download something else to play as I imagined i had basiclly no chance of getting my money back and feel robbed. I downloaded ark survival but them thought about mods. Does this game have a modding community? I also wondered if character customization was possible on the non official servers. I don't want people repeating what i have already read in that "its like real life you are what you are". I just want to change to a white character.
both late and optimistic. the developers (as of their last comment on the issue) do not wish to give you the choice regarding your gender or skin colour. to quote "the choice has not been taken away from you; you never had one". i personally don't care what colour my pixels are, nor what digital genitals i have. if the team don't want customization in that regard, i fully support them. it is their game after all. i suggest you think hard and long about why the colour of your avatar means anything at all to you. do you not play tomb raider because the avatar is a girl? or the arbiter levels in halo because the character model is a freaky alien? or any tank/mech games because you are not a machine?
"Their" game sigh. Not "our" game seeings as we pay money in? Doesn't seem fare finding this out after spending. It's not much of a game without the players. Then I suppose you will say, as you agree and I'm sure your majority agree with you, its just not my game as I'm in the minority. Bravo to you for being so liberal minded by the way. If only there were more like you in the world eh.
"Their" game sigh. Not "our" game seeings as we pay money in? Doesn't seem fare finding this out after spending.
it's early access, not a completed game. it literally said "anything could change. we make exactly zero promises" on the page you bought it from.
http://ask.fm/garryjnewman/answers/136693573563 Any consideration in making gender less permanent? e.g. changing on spawn, changing when server wipes, changing every month, or maybe a CHOICE? Garry: No
Why are forums such hard work? I haven't asked for the devs oppinions on the subject. I have all ready read them through a google search. I would just like the modding / custom server query answering.
Doesn't seem fare finding this out after spending.
We've never sold it on that premise.
Also, I do appreciate how you have answered this post without any harshness. It was quite hard to write without sounding racist. [editline]21st May 2016[/editline] @bucksexington's post -- i cant find the quote button so... yeah no shit [editline]21st May 2016[/editline] I'll check back later maybe but I'm off to Ark survival now. I seem to have over looked knifeys comment before... "i suggest you think hard and long about why the colour of your avatar means anything at all to you. do you not play tomb raider because the avatar is a girl? or the arbiter levels in halo because the character model is a freaky alien? or any tank/mech games because you are not a machine?" You seem to have some amazing ability to know what games I have played in my life, you should seriously capitalize on that skill friend you can make a fortune with a gift like that.
Here is something else to consider: What other game out there at once gives you character diversity (you are not all clones of the same 4-10 character heads and 2-50 hairstyles plus a bunch of clothing options), but doesn't let you choose them? The game's in alpha, and this is the time to experiment with features, when things are still fairly fluid and plastic. At this phase, if the devs decide that something isn't working, they can throw it out and replace it with something else and they'll have lost maybe a few weeks of work by discarding that attempt; if the game was weeks before release and a feature had to be rewritten, the game would need to be delayed (if this feature was necessary for a "not Early Access anymore" launch) and potentially a year or two's worth of developer effort would be going into the bit bucket. As garry has said in the past, "If it sucks, we'll take it out." Rust is about emergent player behaviour. It is about being tasked with a challenge (survive) and put into a situation (an island full of naked people with weapon caches and frequent supply drops of weapons and materials) and then doing what you want with that situation (some people deathmatch, some people make Olympic stadiums and invent games). What character model you are really shouldn't matter, as Rust does not present itself as a reality simulator, nor is realism the specific reason for this change. Anyone defending it because "it's realistic" is missing the point because caving someone's skull in with a rock for the four pounds of metal fragments they are storing "somewhere" about their naked body is also "realistic" but not a relateable or common experience for most of us. It is up to you to decide who you are, but it should not matter what your character model is. Any discomfort you may feel, for any reason and not mere crass bigotry this is not about accusing you of racism, is something that a developer cannot assist you with. I am not mocking you in any way here, but you should consider why you are seemingly incapable of untying your personal identity from your uncustomizable avatar. I won't go any further on this topic because I'm not your therapist and unsolicited cognitive therapy isn't on topic for this thread, but you may want to have some conversations with yourself about why this is a problem -- and again, this is not about calling you a latent racist. Another reason is that you can spend hours getting lost in character generation. garry's not a fan of that, at least for Rust. You noticed you didn't go through character generation, and that's exactly the point. You launched Rust for the first time, you connected to a server, and you dropped straight into the game, ready to play. It was only after you discovered that the character model you had been assigned was personally uncomfortable in some way for you that you noticed or decided that this was a problem. Aside from the response of discomfort, this is exactly what's supposed to happen as I understand it. And if other people are being racist and calling you nasty names in Rust because of your randomly-assigned skin colour, you can kill them and steal their stuff and burn their house to the ground. That's an aspect the "it's realistic" people don't bring up often.
1) Aside from fan-made cosmetic skins (for weapons/armour) that have to be approved directly by the FacePunch staff before they can make it into the game, there is no modding community for Rust that is accessible by the general Rust population - only for server owners. 2) There are servers, where admins have the ability to change a player's race and gender. But these rights can only be utilized through modded servers, with the changes only happening on any specific modded servers where you have convinced an admin to make the changes. Those were your questions. So I will leave it all at that.

You can simply make a family account share and name the Account appropriately. Example: a friend has the sex/colour of skin etc you wish. If they tell you exactly the Steam Account name and not the profile name you can actually get some choice in the matter. I have my main account as a black male which never bothered me personally. But I did want a grill so I made a family share and got one after asking a friend who changed to female after update.
Hi E_Pizza, thanks, :). You may have made the game playable for me I'm hoping. Will get in touch with some randoms on game chat and see what can happen. :). This is last message I will send. I would have spent another 3-5x what I paid to get the game, to change character skin. Consider this. For the games benefit. I think you may have stumbled on something that could make a lot of money for you. This may sound like a horrible statement, but bare in mind I know how to get your game for 1/3rd of the price everyone else here gets it for. Thanks soo much, I was feeling like I had been taken for a mug.

People often don't give out this info as its kind of a bad idea to give out. That is why I would recommend a friend IRL or someone who trusts you. The algorithm seems to rely at least partially on the steam account name that you choose when you first create it. Also you are welcome :v:
I can't believe there are people out there who still don't understand that rust forces random player models on you. I've had discussions with people who don't own rust or have ever played it commenting on how it doesn't let you choose.

Makes me laugh, devs think this is some new age anti racism / lets teach people what its like to be black, whatever, I don't know whats going through their heads with this idea that no one else is implementing in there games, and the official servers are absolutely littered with racism. I browsed maybe 4 or 5 servers asking the server if they knew how to implement the family thing, and you would not believe the racist crap that I came accross. Just give me a bit of time and I will upload "1" of the 6 racist remarks I came across on your official no nonsense servers. I have to upload to a image hosting site because this site cant handle uploads.
This is last message I will send.

-let me prove that I eat troll bait by posting screenshots of me inviting trolls to throw me bait-
I'm getting mixed messages here. :glare: You basically logged on to an official server and asked people not to push a button labeled "PUSH ME" and then are legitimately surprised that people pushed the button. I bet those people don't even have racist feelings, they just threw out a few racist words in chat because they knew they could get you all worked up. And here you are posting screenshots of it, getting worked up. I don't know why you think official servers are "no nonsense" servers, they're largely unmoderated and unmonitored and are there for testing. This isn't WoW, the devs don't have GMs watching chat and the server constantly. By the way, instead of having to upload to a terrible image-hosting service like tinypic, you can link directly to Steam-uploaded screenshots and it does not reveal your Steam account. Like this: [t]http://images.akamai.steamusercontent.com/ugc/263836909514162036/D10EF3096302CEECBD64F7AB726B77820CD7901E/[/t] (Source: This screenshot posted to the community hub) You just open the image in a new tab and the address is the CDN file path and it doesn't trace back to the account in a visible way.
It's ok, I guess I'm trolling a little, just pissed off i spent money and found something i can't tolerate without being warned first. Just wanted devs to know that the idea they implemented has changed nothing i guess. I'm pretty happy with Ark earlier so will stick with that. E-pizza I did try, I cant find what you are on about. no one knows and the little time im willing to invest figuring it out myself has bore not one single fruit. unless you can pm me some instructions kindly, im done trying. peace to you all. edit, hmmm, actually i have found a lead with the family thing, trying it now. .................................................. Thank you soo much E-Pizza. You are THE man/woman. Worked on first attempt. I know it is hard for some of you looking at this thread to see this and not see me as some scum racist whatever, but I'm honestly not. Clearly I have some issue but its nothing to do with black people. It's hard to explain but I like to play games as sort of role play I guess. I just cant envisage myself as some black guy. It doesn't work for me. When I logged in, Straight away some American kid leapt at me hitting me. I said plz don't hit me I'm friendly. He laughed and I could hear his friend in the background laughing. He said, shut up and die you British piece of shit. So it goes to show that everyone comes across problems in some way or another eventually. A fitting death I think. Peace and love to you all. :)

[t]http://i.imgur.com/Fw2V39P.png?1[/t](on playrust.com) it's almost like they hid it. i never said what games you play. i suggested that either you literally avoid games without a white male protagonist (at which point you are missing out on some awesome games), or you are being pretty hypocritical stressing over your need for a certain skin colour in this game, especially when many games do not allow character customisation. i don't think you are racist (based on this anyway), i just truly don't understand the importance of choosing the colour of your pixels when you barely ever see your own character anyway. especially when it conflicts with the game developers own visions for the game.
Not interested in your post knifey, that warning from the game does not warn about the issues I had. I edited my last post explaining my situation and am not writing anything else on the matter I'm happy now and can get on and play contently. Also one more thing, I usually would have figured this out from the first E-Pizza post, but I had drank a little bottle of martini tonight and that could explain my overly enthusiastic insistence on posting after saying I was done. ;) (User was banned for this post ("posting under the influence" - Gurant))

Can we lock this? There is no point for this thread to go on
Here I am again replying after I said I'm done. I don't think I deserve kudos for being proactive. Without pizza's post I think I would have just moved on. I'm not hyped for this game at all really. I spent maybe an hour looking at some dll files and any others I could find in notepad before checking back here and being handed the solution. Now, if star citizen pulls this on me on release "hopefully" at the end of year, that would be a different matter. I would have not stopped until I had beaten it. I would have debugged the game in Oly and tried all sort of process injection. But telling the truth I would have help from my friends who share my fondness of kali linux. But sometimes a slightly whiney post or 2 on a forum is enough to get the job done without investing ridiculous amounts of time. I mean, its obvious all character skins are held on my hard-drive. its just a matter of making this game choose the ones I want. Wether or not the anti cheat process that's running would pick up on it is another matter. I would be surprised if it didn't pick up on the games process being adjusted for textures. After all, changing game textures is a way to cheat right. making characters flaurescent to give a player night vision esc views.
Without pizza's post I think I would have just moved on.
That'll teach them to be helpful. Meanwhile, 9 grating posts later...

I'll never understand how someone can have enough imagination to role play in a video game, but balk at the idea of having a different skin tone from your real life self. You really do sound like you have a problem with black people. You're implying that it's impossible to feel like yourself in the skin of a black person, that somehow you wouldn't be you if you got a really really dark suntan one day. I'm glad you found your fix, but I think you should really ask yourself why this was so important.
