Garry's Mod Black Screen of Doom crash

I've noticed recently that when playing Gmod, especially singleplayer, the game sometimes freezes and the screen goes black. After Ctrl + Alt + Deleting out and going back in, I can still hear the game functions. I still hear Switching weapons via the HUD and opening and closing the menu. This is particularly jarring when playing multiplayer, as I can still hear people talking over the mic normally. No sound loops, no errors. Nothing.

I tried adjusting the power plan on my laptop, but it still happens.

I have a Nvidia GeForce GT 750m Graphics card running with Windows 8.1, if that helps.
