Hey!
I have a Gmod dedicated server up and running with the following specs:
1GB DDR 2 ram
Intel Atom x2 @ 1.6
Ubuntu Server 12.04 (Headless setup)
We are experiencing some lag with 8+ players on at the same time. Props move around in a delayed/laggy fashion.
Our connection gets 4MB/s on upload speeds so its nothing to do with the connection. (I dont think so maybe Im wrong. Players are getting 120 < ping though. For players in my area they are getting around 30-50)
The CPU allocation is low with 8+ players on however, the ram is not at 85mb free. About 95 % idle for the CPU with 8 players. This sounds wrong, but thats what MPStat is telling me.
So I think the issues are caused by the ram. What amount should I get now? Im leaning toward 2GB. What do you think?
1GB should be ok. It would be better to upgrade to either 2 or 4 GB. In terms of your CPU, thats a little low (it's an atom) although if you aren't having heavy CPU usage maybe it is ok. For your free memory. Make sure you are checking it correctly in linux. Run this command "free -m" and look at the free column in row "-/+ buffers/cache" That is how much memory you actually have free. Linux will allocate unused memory for other things but if you need it, it will give it back.
You could also be having an issue with your internet speeds. Determining where the players are will tell you how you connection is doing. Lets say you have your server in New York, someone in the same town should be getting a 15-30 ping. Someone in say florida may be getting a 50-70. For say south america, maybe 100-150. This can vary a lot though.
In the end, I think you are either having a CPU or RAM issue. One more note though is any source servers kinda run like shit on linux / don't work well. But you shouldn't be having these issues anyway.
ZotacServer:~$ free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 993 908 85 0 64 444
-/+ buffers/cache: 399 594
Swap: 1019 23 996
Is my free -m.
I hate running Windows on a perfectly good server :( .
Any ways to improve SRCDS for Linux or rather improve Linux for SRCDS?
So you actually have 594MB of Ram free. And windows isn't a requirement but can sometime get some kinks out of certain things. I would look into issues with the CPU or internet connection though.
Yeah. Probably my CPU. Internet connection seems fine. Pings alright at about 90 average in european countries.
It is your CPU. Garrysmod is very CPU intensive.
Weirdly enough though, mpstat says only 5 percent of the CPU is being used which is why I find this whole thing a little odd.
A player just spawned a dupe with 100 props in it and it started to lag terirbly. Again though, CPU usage was low and ram usage was 500mb...
Odd.
Your problem is you running a server off a netbook with 1gb of ram. nuff said
Don't run Ubuntu, it is a shitty disto. Switch to CrunchBang like I did.
Holy mother of god....
Thats very slick. Do you think this will solve the issues I have been having?
No, I run my server off of the desktop I am on right now. I have 2gb ram and a duo core. If you have the spare cash, invest in an upgrade. Spend $30 and get another stick of ram.

K. It very well could be a ram issue then. Il go get some more ram soon and hope for the best.
If you ever get your server running smoothly, feel free to message me on steam. I would love to join! :D
