HUD disappears and esc doesn't work when I press chat key

Ok this happens to me every time I press the chat key whether it's in multiplayer or singleplayer. My default chat key is Y, and that is the system default but when I press it my person just looks up and I noticed the HUD disappears and I also can't press esc. The only way I can end my game is if I kill the program in task manager. Does anyone know how to fix this? It's really annoying.

I have this problem too, its really annoying and the only way to temporarily fix this is to close and relaunch game. It usually happens again the next time I join a server though.

Same, seems to happen when I alt-tab with the console or server browser up. Usually if you notice it before pressing escape, pressing console will fix it. Happens so often I bound a key to rejoin the server.
