Every time I load Garry's Mod, it gets to the screen with the guy and the birds that says "Loading..." in the corner, then, in about 2-5 seconds, closes the game and says "hl2.exe has stopped working..."
Please, someone help. I want to be able to play it.
Now I can't play TF2 either. Since I got Garry's Mod, none of the game servers load. It stops responding after about 2/3 of the loading process.

We are going off-topic again.
I'm experiencing a similar problem at the moment
I am having the same problem, I bought it a few days ago when it was 75% off.
If I run it in full screen I can't get back to windows so I run it in a window. After loading the image with the man and a portal gun it immediately stops responding. I left it there for over 10 minutes the first time and nothing happened. I tried changing the directx versions, defragging and verifying file cache but nothing works.

Post your specs.
TBH I don't think my specs are relevant. I can play half life 2, team fortress 2 etc. They all use the same engine.
Anyway I have an ASUS G73SW Laptop.
Windows 7 Home Premium
Intel® Core i7 2630QM
8 Gig DDR3 1333 MHz SDRAM
NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 460M 1.5GB GDDR5
3D 1080p Screen

no they don;'t use the same engine, technically

Actually they do.
If I enable console logging I get this:
"Mounting hl2.. "
I'm not sure if it needs to do this but it looks like it's failing.
I'm having the same problem, only it doesn't close automatically, I have to close it in the Task Manager (hl2.exe). I don't believe computer specs have anything to do with it, it runs on Source, like HL2 etc. Even an explanation of some sort would be nice. D:

I don't know how to, I just made this facepunch thing so I could ask for help. Anyway, my Steam name is the same as this one.:suicide:
Ok I have gotten it to work. The only problem is it's super slow. Took over 10 minutes to get to main menu, took another 5 minutes to load a single player map. It also takes ages just to load the in game menus. I'll work on it a bit more to see why.
I got it working also, after trying again the next day. But now it freezes randomly mid-game and it's really irritating. D:<

Mine still isn't working. >:/
Try to start hl2, load a game. Then quit hl2, and try to open gmod.
Seems to work for some users.

Please forgive me asking, but what's hl2 and how do I get to it?

I never bought Half-Life 2.
And you sure? It's "WhiteCleaver"... Friends are "evetater" and "ARN2POINT0"
Your profile is set to friends only
Ahhh.. Alright, I'll change that. Anyone have anything that can help me?
What Thoboii said is what I came here to say. If Gmod isn't working, you have to warm up the Source engine. Basically, you need to briefly play another Source game (HL2 and CS:S work), then go and try Gmod again. It should work.
Apologies for the bump.
I am having the same issue
Guys I looked it up on youtube and found this that might work for those of you having problems.
go to your launch settings and add -dxlevel 81* +mat_forcehardwaresync 0
I hope this helps you like it did me.
