My friend and I have been having fps issues in gmod and it really isn't making any sense.
Here are his specs:
RAM: 8gb DDR3
CPU: i7 3.4 ghz
GPU: 2 650's sli
HD: 1tb sata 5400
Average FPS: 45
My stuff isn't as good as his but here are mine:
RAM: 8gb DDR3
CPU: Phenom II x4 3.2 ghz // *Upgrading to FX-8320*
GPU: R9 270
HD: 1tb sata 5400
SSD: 120 GB corsair
Average FPS: 30-40
We are both playing on all low.
The general consensus with Gmod is, "the better your computer is, the worse the game will run."
The build of Source Garry's Mod runs on is a single core/thread process. It will only utilize one core of your processor, and even if your CPU is powerful, all that power is not per core, but spread out over each.
Your CPUs may be a large factor with this.
Otherwise let's try to flesh out other issues.
Do any of you have error spam in your consoles of any sort? This can be anything from missing sounds, to missing textures, vertex checksum errors, lua errors, etc.
Did you both try playing the game with NO addons installed whatsoever?
Are you both getting that average FPS on all maps, no matter the complexity?
Are you sure your GMod runs on your primary video card, if you have more then one? There have been issues when GMod was running on the energy saving one by default.

I do not have dual gpus unless you count my on-board integrated one. I will mention to my friend about disabling his sli temporarily to see if it boost his fps.
We were playing on some css maps and we get well over 100 fps on those maps in css.

I thought multi-core rendering had been fixed already. Isn't that a valuable thing to be having in games nowadays, especially in gmod?
Does anyone know when this will get fixed?
I know about over clocking and stuff but I do not like doing that nor should I have too I feel.
Garry never said when it'll be fixed; he said there were issues with multithreading in lua iirc.

He actually did say he'll fix it, but never did fix it. It probably will be fixed, or not, who knows. :v:
Upgrading to an FX-8320 will probably lower your FPS. 8 cores at 3.5GHz, when only one core is being used, is rather slow.

my current cpu is 3.2 ghz.
0.3 Ghz isn't a big difference. You'll just bottleneck your game.
What background programs do you have started?
If you got alot of stuff on your PC, you might want to clean up a little. Get CCleaner from Pirifom.com, clean up those temp files and get rid of unwanted registry keys.
Uninstall unused programs and remove consistent processes that only uses resources.
