weapon sounds not working.

the weapons from half life 2 make no sounds when fired. to try to fix this, i tried following [URL="http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1299208"]this[/URL] thread's suggestion. it did not fix the problem, but it made the sound played when switching weapons able to be heard again, which i had not noticed before. i tried unsubscribing from a lot of my mods to see if it fixed anything. it did nothing. i tried verifying the cache to see if it did anything. it did nothing. please help.
