Hello! I bought Garry's mod earlier this day in the Humble Bundle sale, I was hoping to play immediately but, nope. When I go to the multiplayer thing the multiplayer box that should show the servers is blank. I tried using the classic legacy server browser but still nothing... I went to gametracker to get an IP-address from an RP server i went to the developer's console and typed in " connect [ipaddress] " it was on "Connecting to server" with 2 bars on the loading bar. then after about 3 minutes a box says "cannot connect to server even after 4 tries" or something like that.. I also tried the STEAM server browser, The servers showed up and I picked a prop hunt server, and the same thing happened... I really want to play gmod right now, i dont have any games to play.. Can anyone help me? Google doesn't help, I've looked EVERYWHERE and all i found were old archived threads... P.S. Firewall is off
Have you got a notification from Windows Firewall?
Nope, got no notification the first time I opened gmod
You could try to manually add it to your "Allow" list in Windows Firewall? (hl2.exe)
I did that but i didnt check the hl2.exe only Garry's Mod and Steam
You need to do hl2.exe because that's what Garry's Mod uses
Alright guys, Thanks all your replies. Ill try it when i get back home and ill update you guys, :) [editline]12th April 2014[/editline]
You could try to manually add it to your "Allow" list in Windows Firewall? Someone? please? I cant do anything in garry's mod and other games...
What Router/Modem Do you have?
If I am right, some of the pirated games have special server browsers, that replace the steam ones for obvious reasons. Try re-installing steam completely. Kind of radical, I know, but it is possible that those pirated versions you have are screwing it up. I'd recommend deleting them, too.
Its possible that when you installed the pirated copies that modified the hosts file and redirected connections from the steam master servers.
I've deleted everything pirated reinstalled steam I have a router/modem that my stupid ISP gave me, I think it's their own router/modem , its very shit, i cant portforward it. @Blackfire How do i get rid of those? P.S. sorry for image macro x3
You will have to check the hosts file, as far as I remember, it's in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
Yeah, in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc there's a file named "hosts" Open that up and post the contents here so I can help you. Open it with notepad.

From that hosts file I can say your computer is infected with a virus which came from downloading "Haxlib" cheats. But I can't see any connection blocking to the steam servers. It could the virus/cheats which are causing the issue. You will need to remove the cheats if they are still on your system. You'll also need to get a full virus scan done. Malwarebytes should do the trick. Malwarebytes After that, let me know if the problem is still there.
Malwarebytes ran twice (thanks for referring me to the software, its amazing) Still nothing ALSO I've tried using Private Tunnel (Free VPN service) and it doesn't work, maybe it also has to do with the firewall or my internet What if you guys could give me stuff to test if the firewall is broken or something
It shouldn't be anything to do with your firewall because you've tried turning it off as you said in the OP. If a VPN service didn't work, assuming you configured it properly, then the problem lies within your computer and/or garry's mod. [editline]19th April 2014[/editline] Could I get a link to your steam profile?
what anti virus are you using? cuze only firewall can make this kinda problems and do a virus scan maybe https://www.malwarebytes.org
My steam name is: photoshoplol Im using AVG Okay i will try
no no no!! AVG IS A SUICIDE! :suicide: use avast if you dont want to pay use IObit Malware Fighter and just find a cdkey easy to use
IObit Malware Fighter is known to create numerous issues with GMod ans Steam.
What should I REALLY use?
Just reset the hosts file http://www.thewindowsclub.com/how-to-set-the-windows-7-hosts-file-back-to-default
I have the same problem and I've never downloaded any pirate version of a game. GMod was the 1st game on my computer. I use Norton, could the antivirus be the problem?
