Recently I've been getting more lag from NPCs than usual, only when mass spawning, specifically from citizens. I used to be able to spawn 100+ with only around 20 fps.
After doing a series of tests, I've discovered that once I spawn 9 or more citizens, I get a really choppy, strobe-like lag.
I also discovered that I can spawn spawn 100+ kleiners without any significant or game-ruining lag.
Another thing I discovered was that when I press Esc and go to the menu, the choppy fps lag goes away completely, as long as you have the menu open.

- ATI Radeon HD 4870
Cores, not CPUs. Also, that cpu is old. You should upgrade it.
I just copy/pasta'd the info from the DirectX Diagnostics window.
And yeah, I've been wanting to upgrade my CPU and motherboard for awhile.
Anybody know the source of the problem yet? I'm guessing it has to do with the new update.
Could be the new update. Maybe (this idea is hanging on a thread) it has something to do with Nextbot.
I would try reinstalling Garry's Mod as in a full wipeout including all addons, but I know this is probably something you or many other people would not like to do. I've seen random issues like this after browsing on here for awhile before, and lot's of times it gets fixed by the above, but just as many times as not, it may not fix it.
Yeah, I'd probably agree it's the newest update.
Also a bug report may be in order.
I think I already tried the full reinstall of gmod. I'll submit a bug report, though.
Got the same problem here buddy, and we have very similar specs. I only get bad NPC lag with citizens, however i can mass produce any other NPC except citizens and rebels. The only errors i get are missing animation errors for idle animations. I tried to verify cache on all HL2's and even the SDK content, but still no bone. I record Gmod footage for youtube videos, so i know that my computer can handle these things normally. A group of like 20 citizens puts my framerate at like 10 FPS, while 200 combine elites with guns only puts me down to 45 FPS. I really want this to be fixed.

You didn't have to, Max is working on it. The problem is the NPCs don't have any scene files so they have no actions (specifically citizens); this can be seen when you spawn a few citizens and the console prints something like "scene.image\idle is missing" or something along those lines.

I think that NPCs that use the Citizen AI have more complex routefinding, especially on heavily noded. If you put Combine and Rebels on an NPC noded map and have them fight each other, you'll probably find that the rebels move around and cover more, fleeing when alone and have a wider variety of animations.
The issue with the scenes has been fixed now. Lag is still an issue though for whatever reason.
