I just bought Garry's Mod from Steam and i am having issues connecting to online servers. I never get past the loading screen because it is either going to pop up an error window saying that i am missing a map or it'll be loading for at least 20 minutes and then take me back to the gamemodes list. I have tried at least 25 servers and i am waiting for a long time for each server and i never get to play. Note that i do not own Counter Strike Source, i have L4D 2 instead. Is this why it is doing that? Should i purchase Source? I really wanna play this game i don't wanna see my money go to waste.
Well, the issue isn't on your end.
The server owners are probably too lazy to force their clients to download the map they're using so you have to manually download the map from the [URL="http://steamcommunity.com/workshop/browse/?appid=4000"]Workshop[/URL].
I think Garry said that the current map and game-mode are automatically downloaded from the Workshop ( without the server owner needing to do anything ) if it's available.
Chances are the map isn't on the Workshop, or it's in a bundle and the game doesn't know how to find it.

I have tried joining TTT, Prop Hunt, Sandbox, MORBUS and Stop it Slender! But without any luck unfortunately :/ I just visited the Workshop and i am downloading a Prop Hunt pack and a TTT starter pack which contains all the maps and stuff needed in order to play. I hope i will be able to join a server after it's done!
Make sure in options --> multiplayer that downloading custom content is enabled.
