After the release of the Steampipe update, Garry's Mod ran at a very improved pace for a while on my computer, loading maps and menus much faster than previously. However, sometime later, my Garry's Mod has stopped loading fast. What I mean is that instead of taking what is usually 30 seconds to load the main menu, it takes 2-3, sometimes even 5 minutes to load the menu. When loading maps, upon clicking start after selecting a map, it takes 2-3 minutes just to get to the loading screen, and another 5-10 or more just to load the map. And before you assume I have a bad computer or a bad processor, other source games (like Team Fortress 2, Portal, among other Valve games) work just fine, faster even compared to before Steampipe. I'm not sure if there's something wrong with Gmod specifically, or just my copy, but I'm stuck to using SFM (not that SFM is bad, I just like using Gmod). If anyone can help solve the issue, I'd greatly appreciate the help :)
I have the same exact problem as well. All my other games work just fine, I also have steampipe enabled for all source games still in beta, plus I disabled steam cloud. I'm getting freezes not only when I try to start gmod up, but also when I try to quit the game, when I try to connect to a server or to start a map in single player, when I try to enable/disable a SINGLE addon, when I try to unmount or mount a game as well, it's ridiculous. Even when an addon is installing or updating it will freeze up when it finishes working on the last addon in queue. Every little thing I try to do it freezes like hell. Do you experience freezes when you try to perform any of these actions? One thing that I'm very suspicious of is this specific update.. 2 changelogs stand out to me. One says that addons should now load much faster (especially if you have lots installed), and the other one says map icons should now load much faster. This was the specific update that started the massive loading times and freezes. There's also alot of people freezing at the blue screen, however I get past the blue screen very fast, but I freeze at the background screen (with the pictures and where the main menu would appear). Which part do you freeze at, the blue screen or the background screen? One more thing I want to mention is that I see in console that when you try to load a map it will perform some kind of action where it seems like the game will go through all the maps you have installed. It says something like TEST followed by the name of the map or something. I think that whatever its doing to each of the maps causes freezing to occur and the load time to increase. These are just my thoughts, I'm not implying in anyway that I'm correct. So don't take my word for it right away.

I freeze at the same points you do. I gave a try at installing the developer beta version, but while it does decrease the load times by a little bit, it still has the same problem -_-
I've always used the dev branch and that didn't do anything. Lately when I get to the background screen the main menu will appear and it will be unfrozen for about 2-3 seconds and then the game will freeze up. Before the menu wouldn't even appear. Also do you freeze at the blue screen or the background screen? I asked you that but you didn't answer that question yet. I ask this because I see some threads of people freezing at the blue screen and dont even get to the facepunch logo. Also what are your thoughts on that update I referred to?

The only thing not loaded up before freezing is the Gmod logo and the version date. I also checked the update you linked. That's quite ironic, as all it did was make my game slower as a result. Aw well, I suppose I'll just use SFM. Mind you, I don't hate SFM, it's honestly really good for my needs, and runs much better on my computer compared to Gmod, but it just doesn't provide as much as Gmod did in the tool department
