I was going to post this on the Steam Forums but I thought I would get a faster response here. BTW I am using ubuntu and doing all this through PuTTY. My question is why does SteamCMD say it recommends not using root to start a server? Whats wrong with using root to make a start a server? Just wondering becuase I want to know if I can keep using root or if I should make a other user for my servers.
Does anyone know why SteamCMD recommends using root to make a server?
Because root has root access. I think that if someone is able to find an exploit in SRCDS servers, they might be able to exploit your server if it's running in root. Why do you want to run it in root anyway? I'd say, never run servers etc in root unless it's explicitly asked for.
Ok well I guess I will make a steam user like the wiki says thank you.
