Uh Garry... https://twitter.com/#!/garrynewman/status/181097040007270401 Is this related to GMod? If so that would be awesome!
Oh wow, first TF2 and now this. I certainly hope it doesn't go F2P.
He could have been commenting on another game too, like people have been commenting about TF2 becoming F2P
No, I don't think it was related to Garry's Mod. Check where he sent the tweet to, I saw this yesterday.
...Gmod turning f2p sounds like it'd be a bad thing... I can imagine the reactions of those that just bought it this month/earlier this year, too; mostly a bunch of "what is this-I don't even..." I don't see how turning Gmod into 'freemium' would even work...(unless he's tired of making money, haha)
no.
If that's the case I really hope that there's not going to be any microtransactions. It just wouldn't work for a game like gmod.
I doubt that we would get a $10 refund when it goes Free-2-Play. But oh well..
I doubt it's gmod going F2P. I can't see how it would work, apart from ingame adverts in the Q menu there would be no profit revenue. If it did: For people who already bought it - sush. That's life, it happens.
If you read the tweet, the guy was asking for questions. Garry was probably talking about another game, most likely TF2. There is no way gmod would work as an f2p.
No it wouldn't.
Why not?
This would not work out at all -.-t. Minges from all over the world would hop on and ruin everything );
Why not?
We'd have a new age of what was once called "Mingebags", and stuff like that. I don't think the game is really all that expensive anyway, but I don't know. There's some pro's and cons if this happens, but I have a feeling it won't.
Before we get carried away, we need to read it in context:
My legal muscles feel underexercised this week. And I'm bored. Someone ask me a question and I'll tweet my answer...

Are there any legal issues in turning your game from pay to free to play. Do you owe anything to people that already bought it?
Obviously I can't read Garry's mind, but based on the context, it seems to me that he was simply humoring someone he follows on Twitter.
Whenever someone tells me they can't buy/afford Garry's Mod, I know right then and there that person is probably 13 years old.
Whenever someone tells me they can't buy/afford Garry's Mod, I know right then and there that person is probably 13 years old.
I purchased Garry's Mod when I was 12.
if garry's mod gets free, people will hack who get banned will just be able to create a new account, change their IP and log back on and hack some more. but garry's mod is already dirt cheap and people do that anyways right now. if anything, the price needs to be higher to dissuade people from just buying the game again after getting banned.
Maybe he was speaking about Garry's older works? FaceWound maybe?
Maybe he was speaking about Garry's older works? FaceWound maybe?
which was released completely f2p and open sourced :V
Besides, Garry makes a living off of Garry's Mod, and if it was to suddenly not generate an income I think he'd go downhill fast. (Especially with his purchasing habits)
TF2 makes more money now it's F2P. Plus Garry's Mod has sold 1.5 million units - I'll be OK if it stops selling :) But I wasn't talking about Garry's Mod - It was a question I was wondering about.
^ This should clear a lot of things up. Besides, to those of you who say it wouldn't work, I can imagine it working very well if, say, you have to pay for Steam Workshop access, and server owners can blacklist freebies. Those combined would make an extremely compelling reason to pay.
$1 per prop!
$1 per prop!
That'd be a little unfair to the community who can't pay for shit. I don't have a credit card or a paypal
That'd be a little unfair to the community who can't pay for shit. I don't have a credit card or a paypal
It was a joke.

Seriously, what's the point of playing Gmod if you can't get addons or access good servers without paying? Might as well just download Gmod 9.

You don't get update and ease of use convenience of Workshop. This would allow folks to have a good time in singleplayer (with some work), but still persuade them to pay in to make things go a lot smoother and error-free, as well as the promise of a huge wealth of multiplayer servers they couldn't get to before. I'm not saying it should happen, I'm just explaining how it could likely work if it were done. Would also stop a lot of risky illegal downloads of the game, as most who do that just want to goof off in singleplayer anyway, and yet it'd still provide a sound enough argument to give a little something back.
I know garry is pretty well off from the copies of gmod sold, however, he does work really hard to add additional features and constantly develop the game. Plus it's only $10, it's relatively cheap.
The game is incredibly cheap, and as a physics sandbox you couldn't really sell hats. (PAC allows me to make my own hats) Also I don't think Garry is a real hat enthusiast. Requiring pay for addons wouldn't work very well since most widely used addons are in SVN that currently is incompatible with workshop(or at least every revision must be committed manually which is a pain) and servers already download maps and other things for clients. Only the banning freebies would be attractive but seeing the current population of Gmod, I doubt it would change much. So unless Garry is a hat enthusiast and wants to sell digital hats and maybe rename the game to Garry's Hats, I don't think free to play is a viable option for Garry's mod, even though I wouldn't mind seeing Garry's Hats go free to play just like Team Hats 2.
