• Changing the background to a .bik (Bink) Video.

Like in L4D and L4D2. Well, I've been thinking about messing around to the possible extent of the source engine and making an interactive menu, I would need to change the background to a map (.bsp) file AND a video (.bik) file. By interactive menu, I mean like the Splinter Cell Conviction menu or something like it. So. How do I script gmod to load a map or a .bik file? And yeah. This is just an idea to make a "Prettier" interface for gmod. I'm not quite sure if I should post this on the Help And Support section, but since this isn't a "Help, my gmod is crashing!" request, then I guess this is the right section.
I wouldn't suggest you making background to be a .bsp map as it is in hl2. I once did that it worked fine. But instead of 10 seconds of game loading. It took like a whole map loading ( White screen with gmod logo and circles rotating ) Took long time to start game.
Hmm, I was thinking about how awesome it would be to have the back grounds as the other games, but that is a good point. Longer load times isn't great for my as I open and close Gmod a lot.
What about the bink video then?

-Another Bump, sorry folks, but I really want to know this one-
Left 4 Dead 2 uses .bik videos, but that's a different engine version. As mentioned earlier, just make a BSP. It's as close as you'll get...
...and it will load all of your addons, making the GMod startup time rival that of the time it takes to load singleplayer.
Exactly, hence why I want to modify Gmod to it's possible extent in order to do so. And I think it's pretty simple to load the .bik file, I've been searching for that trigger in the L4D contents, but I'm all out of luck.
well. L4D has got some bink.dll file. this file loads on L4D boot. If you want bik playing in gmod you should implement this dll somehow. like what I said, An automatic dll injector normally used for hacking. and then get the lua code to read from the memory adresses the dll runs. and get lua to use this dll to run a bink video.
It's not that simple, seriously. You'd be better of asking Garry to implement bink like it was pre-orangebox, as it's currently disabled because it's not used.
it actually IS that simple. if you can call it simple. because the memory adress won't be the same everytime it's used. it'd be better if LUA was able to directly load a DLL and use its functions
Except the engine version difference between GMod and Left 4 Dead poses a problem.
Hey uhhm this sounds kinda cool, what if you made it so it loaded a bsp map, without loading anny mods, cos when i first got gmod (5 years ago :D) i had no mods, no added content except orange box, and the maps would load like a jet. BUT, if we made Bink vid files load, there may be a problem with when the bink gets to end, it could glitch up, or freeze, or even crash. i think itl be safe to stay with a pic as background, although im always happy to be a testing hamster for gmod :D
Why do you even want this anyways, you're never gonna stay on the menu looking at it so why bother asking Garry to implement this when he could be fixing things that are actually broken.

It's also a useless feature.
It's preference.
Not useless, it's use is for aesthetics. *Billy Mays voice* IMPRESS YOUR FRIENDS WITH YOUR BADASS VIDEO BACKGROUND. OR PRANK SAID FRIENDS BY CHANGING THEIR BACKGROUND TO HATCHET VS. GENITALS! (:ohdear:)
Why not make an animated .vtf as a Background, Record Footage of a Map or scene, then convert to a .gif file, then convert to a VTF file? easier than using bik or a Bsp. Offtopic: Why are my ratings not saving?
