I just purchased the GMOD + Counter Strike: Source package on Steam for £15.00, and CS works fine, but I've noticed that when I run GMOD I get an error: "hl2 has stopped responding", does this mean I 100% need HL2, or is there another solution to this problem? I thought that CS would work since it is a source game an all, wouldn't all the source games have the exact same models and animations?
Nah Garry messed the game up like usual. You gotta wait a few.
Oh, thank you for telling me. :)
However, you can bypass the error by launching Gmod, ignoring the error, and launch it again (with the error opened).

No. Some are shared (you can see a lot of props from HL2 in CS:S for example), but not all source games have the exact same models and animations. You'll run into certain maps and gamemodes that will require you have certain assets from certain games mounted (L4D1/2, CS:S, HL2, EP1, EP2, DoD), and if you don't own the game to mount the assets, the related assets will give you pink-and-black checkerboxed textures and giant flashing red ERRORs for missing models.
You do only need one game on the source engine other than GMod to play GMod, though, because that gives you access to the Source SDK Base and access to some shared common assets necessary to play sourcemods (Empires, The Hidden, Dystopia), which Garry's Mod technically is, albeit a commercial one.
So to address your topic title, you don't need HL2 in particular to use GMod, but you do need to buy a commercial source game to play GMod. TF2 and Alien Swarm, while source games, do not give you free access to the Source SDK Base.
