It always takes ages to load Garry's Mod.
I've deleted a lot of stuff and close everything before I play.
My Specs:
OS-Windows Vista Home Premium
Processor-AMD Turion X2 Dual-Core Mobile RM-70 2.00GHz
Memory (RAM)-3.00GB
How fast is your HDD and how large is your addons folder?
Try defragmenting your hard drive
Clearing some addons out of your folder
You can also try defragmenting your garrysmod cache
Go onto your games list>Right click Garrysmod>Properties
One thing I noticed which costs A LOT of time are generating Render-Targets for GMod. This is done on starting GMod. Not loading a map!
Sadly, Wire creates 32 (Yes, 32!) Render-Targets just for the GPU.
Try deletting the contents of garrysmod/settings/render_targets (except for GModToolgunScreen.txt). Maybe this can increase your start-up.
But be warned: Once you join a server with wire, you will download these files again.
I have personally locked the permissions to write to this folder.
oh, also another thing is SVN files. I'm not sure if this slows the game loading but it deffinetly slows map loading. Go here to learn proper use of SVN http://www.facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=688324 (Thanks to Divran for this :D)
I have roughly 1.5 gigabytes of add-ons and my load times don't really take any noticeable hit.
I'd go with the poster a bit above me and say that you should try defragmenting. It's possible your files are fragmented as hell and are taking forever to grab from the hard drive.
But since you say it's ALWAYS taken long to load, it could just be your PC.
Could you also specify which loading sequence is taking long to load? Steam's "Starting Garry's Mod", the blue loading bar at the beginning, or when you join a game?
