im making a map for gmod in google sketchup, but when i export the vmf it gives me the error message "there do not appear to be any valid groups or content"
From when was it possible to make maps in Sketchup?.....
from a time ago, using this plugin, http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/SketchUp_Source_Tools , and thats not what i asked
That plugin is for making models to use in Hammer, not to make maps.
...... no, its for both, it can export VMF's and SMD's, and thats still not at all what i wanted to know... if u scrollthrough this ull even see a map they did as a tutorial http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/SketchUp_to_Hammer_Export_plugin
The .VMF export plugin allows you to export SketchUp models to Hammer, the environment editor for the Source game engine. Hammer is used to create game levels for titles such as Half Life, Portal, Counter Strike, Day of Defeat, and Left 4 Dead.
Care to change that?
FFS "Let's start by going through the entire map exporting process with a simple example map." thats also there, i said you should scroll... damn
Either way, it would be a lot better to make maps in Hammer itself.
... thanks alot for that comment, thats exactly what i needed to hear... its ALOT easier to make stuff in sketchup according to me now, can someone give me an ANSWER, and not act like an idiot

http://www.facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=997338 He also finds sketchup a lot easier to work with. Also, alot is not a word. "A lot" =/= "Alot"
thanks :)
It's a bad idea to make model-maps. They aren't lit properly and can't be used for visibility calculations both in-compile and in-game because they aren't brushes.
Create a convex brush (all faces must face outside), group it, create next brush ... export it. There's nothing much that can go wrong. If you open the map in Hammer and you get the message that brushes got deleted they are either concave or have reversed/missing faces. If not ungroup and group that brush, then it shouldn't get removed the next time you export it and open the map in Hammer. @the guys who have no clue about sketchup and it's plugins: It can export VMFs in a valid format and it can export SMDs in a valid format. Maps =/= models.

Not to be a stick in the mud, but you could just use Hammer for everything :sigh:
2 words: 1. Use 2. Hammer Its much better than SketchUp for making maps for Source Its very easy to learn... Just draw blocks!
:c :sigh:
Not to be a stick in the mud, but you could just use Hammer for everything :sigh:
Agreed, Im not sure why even in the first place you would want to use SketchUp
its smoother, easier, better interface, and so on..
Hammer was made to make maps for games. SketchUp wasn't.
NOWAY, i thought hammer was made for architecual design and sketchUp for games, oh how foolish off me... (for those who do not get it) *sarcasm* im sorry, but obviously the new tools by source are made for making models and maps in sketchup for hammer
Just use Hammer to make the maps. It will work better, and you will get less errors with the maps. And it will teach you how to use it and all of its functions.
:/ ok :sigh: btw, my gmod doesnt work, and i cant bump my post, can someone go here: http://www.facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1005504 PLEASE ive tried EVERYTHING
