i think your friend set hudhide or drawhud to 0 or something

Link to his steam profile, he probably pirated it.
Tell him to change his screen resolution in the garrys mod video options, play with that and see if it eventually comes up. If you have the wrong resolution, the crosshair/hud and some menus won't show up.
