• Do you need tortoise svn to run most addons?

First off, hello. ok, i have a problem. I downloaded some stuff when i first got gmod, and they work fine. those did not go into the addons folder in gmod. then i go and download a couple of packs like phx 3 and stuff. And when i go in, it's not in the game. So i know that you need tortoise to run phx. So, then i get a vehical pack and that also goes in addons. when i go in the game (after i cut and paste and all that jazz) it is not there. So, here are my questions... 1. Do you need tortoise svn to run most addons 2. what does tortoise svn do? 3. just in case, can you tell me if im putting them into my computer right. I download off garry's mod.org, open folder, CUT(i capitilize that because most people say extract, so i might be doing it wrong), and paste in garry's mod folder. P.S. I do not really know much about this stuff, so if you can explain it, that would be helpful. P.P.S. Don't get me wrong i like computers and stuff. They can get me confused sometimes though. :(
Svn is just a way of downloading the addons. It is generally considered the best way to do it because you can easily update those addons with the SVN client (tortoise svn) without re-downloading the whole addon and deleting the old one. also many addons are only avaliable through svn. It is by far the best way to get addons. Search the forums for an svn tutorial. Its pretty simple. Everyone was where you were at some point, dont worry. Just use the search feature ALOT. there are tutorials out there for damn near everything. Goodluck Edit: This is a good SVN tutorial: http://www.facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=688324
Ok thanks i might have a couple questions but i doubt it.
1) No. But you use TSVN to get the latest version of some of the addons. 2) Downloads stuff. And lets you easily update them. (Read the tutorial for more info) 3) Not sure about the way the new torrents work. Do they download as a zip? If so, you need to extract them. Else cut/paste is the right way to do it. SVN Tutorial link already posted in this thread :)
HOLY SHIZ that made it way easier. And what's sad is that i have been on that thread before... [editline]04:12PM[/editline] umm okay when you say extract what exactly do you mean... : (

Most addons that are not svn (and even some of them) will come in a compressed package(to make them smaller to download). When you open these types of files with the compression software it will give you the option to extract the files (make them big again)
Think of compression as packing. You pack your bag when you go travelling, to make it smaller, easier to carry. Then when you get there you (extract) unpack your stuff again.
