I have the run time, and I have a kinect, but it refuses to work. If I launch gmod and go into the kinect settings and make it show the video feed, my kinect's red lights will turn on but there is no actual video. If I go in game to control a rag doll, the choice pops up but I still cannot control it. The only thing I've found that may be an issue is that I once installed the OpenNI run time just to goof around on, and multiple people have said that the official runtime is not compatible with it. I have uninstalled the OpenNI run time, still nothing. I re installed the Microsoft run time with OpenNI still uninstalled, still nothing. I looked a bit deeper and some people have said that OpenNI still leaves behind a few dll's that the kinect picks up but cannot run, and people have recommended that I should find all the files and uninstall them. Problem is, there are no dll files that I can find that may still have something to do with OpenNI, and the only thing I can think of is to re install windows, but I really don't want to do that. Does anyone else have a solution?
I have the same issue, difference being that the Kinect's green light keeps flashing forever instead of a red light coming on.

Actually I am having the same issue. By red light, I meant the depth sensor. But, the power light just keeps blinking forever.
Make sure you have both the Kinect for Windows Runtime v1.6 And Kinect for Windows SDK v1.6 Installed.
I have the same issue but I believe I have never installed anything else related to Kinect like that OpenNI, I couldn't understand how to get that to work so I immediately deleted it. So I think it's something Garry must fix.

I have them both installed. I launched a sample app and only the microphone worked, so I have a feeling this has something to do with broken kinect run times.

Does the kinect for windows camera show up in your device manager?
Does the kinect for windows camera show up in your device manager?
Did for me with just Runtime
Does the kinect for windows camera show up in your device manager?
Yes. I can use the kinect as a microphone, and the kinect physically responds to applications, just no actual image shows up.
SDK comes up with error when installing but doesn't say what :( computers

"and the kinect physically responds to applications" what apps?
"and the kinect physically responds to applications" what apps?
Applications that are in the Dev SDK. It turns on the sensor, but no image shows up. I have a feeling that this has something to do with the runtime and not gmod, so I posted this to see if anyone has a solution.
Which kinect are you using? The windows one or xbox one?
There's a difference?
There's a difference?
One works almost automatically, the other is hacked in to work.

I have the Xbox 360 version. And although didn't work immediately, it works now. I downloaded that SDK and it worked.
Yeah I get the feeling you need to download the SDK to get the XBox one to work. If someone can confirm that I will update the wiki.
aww the SDK gets error immediately when i try to install. This is so depressing!
*EDIT* actually just seeing that you need visual studio to install SDK so i will confirm if this fixes.
*EDIT* Bloody 6gb for Visual Studio and Microsoft downloads take forever for me, took me an hour for SDK to download :S
*FARK!* Visual Studio came up with error half way through i give up!
Fixed it for me by installing the SDK.
Fixed it for me by installing the SDK.
Did you need Visual Studio to install the SDK?
Which kinect are you using? The windows one or xbox one?
I'm using an xbox kinect. The sdk is installed and working, I don't think that's the issue. I think it has something to do with OpenNI's drivers that the uninstaller left behind, so I was just wondering if anyone had a way to completely uninstall them without reinstalling windows.
The SDK includes the runtime, if you installed the runtime and then the SDK try uninstalling both then only installing the SDK.
Which kinect are you using? The windows one or xbox one?
Would it be possible to get the xbox one to work with just Runtime?
Yeah, you just need to replace it with a windows one
I don't know why so many people have been having issues with this. It DOES NOT require Visual Studio, just the SDK, which comes with the most up to date drivers for the Kinect, either Windows or the Xbox Kinect. Visual Studio is only an IDE for programming in C++.

Gamemaster, more than likely when you had the OpenNI drivers it didn't uninstall the Camera portion of the driver, but uninstalled the USB Kinect Mic driver and the Motor Driver. Simple fix, the Kinect is probably using the OpenNI Camera Drivers. Go to your Device Manager, find your Kinect and see if it shows it's using Prime Sense or OpenNI, uninstall ANY Prime Sense or OpenNI drivers and delete, should give you the option to do so, sometimes OpenNI and Prime Sense have entries in Device Manager that are not under the Kinect, then make sure that any Prime Sense and OpenNI folders in Program Files and Program Files (x86) are deleted otherwise Windows will find them and reinstall the wrong drivers again.
I'm using the Xbox Kinect with those v1.6 SDK drivers and had done this same exact process when installing v1.5 from OpenNI, the OpenNI drivers are very messy and also as you had said leave the drivers untouched even after uninstalling.
EDIT: Forgot to mention, the new drivers for the v1.6 SDK show up under PrimeSensor in Device Manager, you can check each driver in there by right clicking and going to Properties, it should show Driver Provider: Microsoft Corporation, if it shows PrimeSense it's the wrong driver and if you have any difficulty uninstalling it such as even after getting rid of it and it still manages to install as a PrimeSense driver then you will have to go to Driver Details and it will show you the location of each driver for that part of the Kinect, manual deletion of drivers isn't a cake walk but it's not horrible, you'll have to go to the file location and snub it from existence, also you should have your Kinect unplugged the whole time for this and have Show Hidden Devices checked in Device manager so you can see the drivers for the Kinect even though it's unplugged. But more than likely you'll only be looking for this little guy:

I found it necessary to Install the SDK for the XBOX one. I also found that you had to uninstall the Primesense Driver Packs from the Add/Remove program window. Then restart your computer.

The SDK works for either and yes, Add or Remove Programs is where you uninstall the drivers from, but it doesn't always delete them per say if Windows is still using them for some reason.
I'm contacting Microsoft, the bloody SDK just won't install!
[editline]12th December 2012[/editline]
YES! SDK 1.5 not 1.6 installed and i am now waving a lightsaber around in Garry's Mod!

Well that was odd. I opened up the device manager, did nothing because it said it was using microsoft drivers, nothing happened, and then I launched up gmod and it started working. Are you a wizard?
