How do people get face poser to work with tf2 characters?

Sorry for this noobish question, but ive been wondering about this for a while.
In all these comic strips and screenshots people manage to make the tf2 characters display various emotions, but i can never get it to work personally. Nothing ever changes unless you use the preset buttons + up the expression scale and even then it typically only changes to 1 type that ends up not being changed again even by moving any of the counters or even randomizing it. Am i doing something wrong? Do i need to get a fix or something of the sort to get it to work?

Scroll down. You should see a list of sliders for emotions.

but they dont ever seem to work. Ive tried Changing them all randomly before and it does nothing to the characters actual face even when i apply it
TF2 Characters use a more sensitive faceposer, if you know what I mean.
What I'm saying is that don't set the expression scale that is 1 or more. Try to find one decimal in between 0 and 1 that will work. Then LIGHTLY change the scale so it changes the face pose.
