Hi !
(Not posted on Help and Support, because it's not a problem I have currently, but a question about ambiguous points with LAN Games)
For a LAN Party, I'd like to show off friends Garry's Mod. The thing is, the network for the LAN Party won't have an Internet connection, so I suppose we'll be restricted into a Steam Offline mode. But the topic is very obscure, I don't know how off-broadband LAN games are managed.
- Before we start, YES, I've browsed through Steam Support and found that : https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7508-WRYO-2418 So Steam Offline IS the usual way to play LAN Party Games.
- First, there's the SteamID issue. I know that, if players are not authed though multiplayer on-broadband mode, they will get a SteamID (as in Lua) equal to STEAM_ID_PENDING, or something we will ALL share in common. I suppose this could break a bunch of addons if not all. If what I'm saying is wrong, please tell me.
Note that if there is actually a problem about SteamIDs that only affects Lua, it doesn't bother me to batch-rewrite any Lua code that depends on SteamID or UniqueID so that compatibility is restored for LAN Games.
- Secondly, there's the account offline-activation problem. I currently own two Steam Accounts with bought Garry's Mod. I don't know if it's authorized to fake account connection (connecting with a computer on an account, then enable offline mode, and doing the same with other computers on the same account) so that we can all play on the same account, off-broadband.
I'm asking about whether it's authorized or not, as if the problem above (Wrong Steam IDs) would just collapse : As if whether we use one same account to play on a LAN Party, is it the same as if we were using 5 bought accounts due to technical authentification limitation.
For your information, it doesn't bother me at all to buy two or three more Garry's Mod on other accounts myself-made using old Orange Box gifted Half-Life 2 game tokens if it's technically necessary. I should not tie them directly on Friends' accounts because I basically want to run four computers anyone can use during the LAN Party.
But if it's technically unnecessary or equivalent... Why bother ? I'd rather keep my Half-Life tokens to gift them on my friends' Steam Accounts if they decide to buy Garry's Mod for their own accounts if they liked it.
These questions are particularly targeted at those who already have done LAN Parties on Source Games, or even better if it's Garry's Mod LAN Parties.
Thanks for reading !
Just use a a cheap 3g network usb adapter,
Since its just lan, you dont need highspeed,
and you only need 1 because you can either share the connection, or just let people use it one at a time to login.
And why do you dont you internet again?
Or if you dont bother, just download the pirated version, i mean its not like you dont suport garry, since you have the game. so i dont see a problem doing that (:
Good luck!

I have a small LAN party of gmod at home from time to time. It does not matter if you have an internet connection. As long as you have a steam account for each player (gmod installed on each steam account), It will run fine in offline mode. It even works on a cross over :D
