Well this certainly is annoying-I can't install new backgrounds for the Gmod menu.
I installed this one: http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=80553
and some others once I was sure it wasn't working properly. I have installed backgrounds fine before my hard drive go wiped, so I don't know what's up.
Note: the sound that goes with that background worked.
Can someone please tell me a proper method on installing a background that I may have forgotten? Or something that may be going wrong?
Please help. I don't like the Gmod background
Are you sure you are renaming it to EXACTLY background01.vtf ?
Also you'll have to remove the old background01.vtf, or just rename it to something like, "bg01_backup.vtf" or similar.
Other than those two, I have no idea what else there could be.
I used to have this error, I fixed it by reinstalling Gmod.

Never really wanted a custom background. I once downloaded one from garrysmod.org and changed it to jpeg for my PC background.

Thanks for the help.

Widescreen resolution doesn't work well together with a non-widescreen background, try to use a non-widescreen resolution temporarily.
